Each module takes only 30 minutes to complete. Read the technical requirements before you begin.
Session 1:Introduction to CLAS Standards Ideal for staff at any level of an organization or agency that serves a culturally and linguistically diverse population. Session 2: Governance, Leadership, and Workforce Ideal for supervisors and hiring managers. Session 3: Communication and Language Assistance Ideal for staff who provide direct services to diverse populations. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) is a preferred term (versus ESL, ELL, etc.) for an individual or group of individuals whose culture and language differ from that of the dominant group (Herrera, 2016). To schedule an appointment, email cwalter@coloradocollege.edu. Appointments scheduled 24-48 hours in advance have the best likelihood of meeting your availability.

The Office of CLD Education recognizes that the land we are on today is the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Ute people. We value the voices and stories of the Native peoples of this region, and we are committed to forming relationships with the many Native tribes and individuals in the greater Colorado Springs community. The Office of CLD Education supports all students, first-years through seniors! Our support ranges from cultural-academic transitions to college to senior thesis, capstone projects, and post-graduate fellowships.

Students are prepared to serve as educators, collaborators, and advocates within schools, community organizations, colleges and universities, and other learning spaces. Through this work, they design, enact, and engage in initiatives that promote educational justice in all its forms. The program is further designed to prepare scholars whose commitments span across disciplines (content/subject areas and academic disciplines), ages (grades/lifespan), and educational spaces (in school/beyond school) to approach teaching, learning, research, and leadership through... We understand the ongoing projects of decolonization, liberation, and abolition as led by communities are central to our work in education. We are committed to learning alongside various culturally sustaining settings and we work to enact them in our own courses, research, and beyond. We understand our program as always in the process of becoming, seeking to grow alongside our students and communities.
Graduates of this program can be found working in any institution or setting that has programs related to culturally sustaining education, educational justice, ethnic studies and other critical, equity- oriented fields of education. In the realm of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI), understanding and addressing culturally and linguistically diverse (CLD) is crucial. Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) is a significant aspect of this discourse, but what exactly does it entail? Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) refers to individuals or groups who identify with different cultural backgrounds, languages, and traditions from the dominant culture in a particular setting. This term is widely used in fields such as education, healthcare, social services, and corporate settings, where there is a conscious effort to support, include, and engage individuals from varied cultural and linguistic backgrounds. In the context of DEI, understanding and acknowledging Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups helps create a more inclusive and supportive society.
People from CLD backgrounds often bring unique perspectives, skills, and knowledge that enrich social and professional environments. However, they may also face specific barriers, such as language differences, cultural misunderstandings, and systemic biases, that impact their ability to participate fully and equally in society. An example of a culturally and linguistically diverse initiative in education is a program that offers bilingual resources and support for students who speak languages other than English at home. In many multicultural schools, teachers work alongside bilingual aides to ensure students understand their lessons, especially for complex subjects. Additionally, schools may offer cultural exchange days, inviting students to share aspects of their culture, food, and traditions. This approach fosters a sense of pride among CLD students and encourages their peers to appreciate cultural diversity.
Addressing the needs of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse groups is a fundamental aspect of DEI. It demonstrates an organisation’s or community’s commitment to equity and inclusion by acknowledging the value of cultural and linguistic diversity. When organisations and communities work to be inclusive of CLD individuals, they not only empower those individuals but also enhance the richness and creativity of the entire environment.
