We welcome individuals from all backgrounds and lived experiences who are passionate about equity and community-centered education. Students are prepared to serve as educators, collaborators, and advocates within schools, community organizations, colleges and universities, and other learning spaces.
Through this work, they design, enact, and engage in initiatives that promote educational justice in all its forms. The program is further designed to prepare scholars whose commitments span across disciplines (content/subject areas and academic disciplines), ages (grades/lifespan), and educational spaces (in school/beyond school) to approach teaching, learning, research, and leadership through... We understand the ongoing projects of decolonization, liberation, and abolition as led by communities are central to our work in education. We are committed to learning alongside various culturally sustaining settings and we work to enact them in our own courses, research, and beyond. We understand our program as always in the process of becoming, seeking to grow alongside our students and communities. Graduates of this program can be found working in any institution or setting that has programs related to culturally sustaining education, educational justice, ethnic studies and other critical, equity- oriented fields of education.

The Center also engages in services and teaching related to its research mission. The concept of culturally relevant pedagogy has been in the literature for almost 30 years. However, like all generative work such concepts need to evolve and change over time.
Today, the import and influence of youth culture must be added to our conceptions of culturally relevant teaching. This course will examine the significance of student learning, cultural competence, and socio-political or critical consciousness. Focusing on young children from birth through age 8, students will be prepared to advance this mission through interdisciplinary coursework that brings together equity, child development, teaching interactions, research, advocacy, leadership, practice-based application of... The program addresses common barriers to higher education, including affordability, access, relevance, and effectiveness. A flexible online model, real-world opportunities for applying learning, and a student-centered teaching and advising model support student success. Students accepted into the major typically have a minimum cumulative 2.00 GPA and a minimum grade of 2.0 for any prior college coursework that may be applied toward the major.
