Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) is a preferred term (versus ESL, ELL, etc.) for an individual or group of individuals whose culture and language differ from that of the dominant group (Herrera, 2016). Walk-ins (Tutt Library 214) are also welcome but subject to availability. The Office of Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education is located in Tutt Library 214. The Office of CLD Education recognizes that the land we are on today is the traditional and ancestral homelands of the Ute people.

The Office of CLD Education supports all students, first-years through seniors! Our support ranges from cultural-academic transitions to college to senior thesis, capstone projects, and post-graduate fellowships. The Culturally and Linguistically Diverse (CLD) Education Certificate of Proficiency for Endorsement prepares educators to meet the needs of K-12 multilingual learners in today’s diverse classrooms, whether in monolingual or dual-language settings. This program equips teachers with the knowledge and skills to create inclusive environments, implement effective instructional strategies, and celebrate the cultural and linguistic assets of all students. Teachers seeking this added endorsement from the Colorado Department of Education must hold a valid Colorado professional teacher license. By completing this certificate, teachers become eligible to add the CLD Endorsement to their Colorado teaching license. This 24-credit (eight-course) program equips educators to work with students from diverse family and cultural backgrounds. Participants will develop the skills to support the linguistic repertoire, academic and social-emotional growth of emergent bilinguals using research-based professional practices and family-centered approaches to educational excellence.

The CLD Endorsement provides educators the skills and knowledge to support second language learners in both their English language development and their overall academic achievement.
The CLD Endorsement is a K-12 credential that is officially awarded by the Colorado Department of Education, upon Institutional recommendation from MSU Denver, School of Education. A minimum of C- is required for all courses in order to successfully complete the CLD endorsement. Additional Course for Option 1: (Pre-service Teachers) Additional Course for Option 2: (Licensed Educators) Culturally & Linguistically Diverse Education This graduate-level course is approved by CDE to address the Colorado licensure renewal rules related to English Learner Educator Standards.
