Two people had been detained in the hours after the shooting, including one who was interrogated by law enforcement, but both were subsequently released. The details surrounding the shooting were not immediately available, but authorities have urged students and faculty to leave the area immediately and follow police instruction. The FBI and Utah officials briefed the press Friday morning on the investigation into the killing of conservative activist Charlie Kirk, announcing a suspect is in custody.

Kirk was shot and killed during an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday. Two potential suspects were detained that day but were later released, sparking a two-day manhunt. The FBI, which was assisting with the probe, released video footage late Thursday showing a man running across the roof of a building and then jumping off the side.
