NPR speaks with Juliette Kayyem, Harvard lecturer and former Homeland Security assistant secretary, about the current status of the FBI investigation into Charlie Kirk's killing Wednesday. Let's bring back Juliette Kayyem of Harvard University, former senior Homeland Security official, for some more insight. Welcome back to you. INSKEEP: I want to start with something that we heard from Governor Cox there that strikes me as really quite important - a way to think of this killing. He says, quote, "there is one person responsible for what happened here." One person responsible. Why is that an important thing to say?
KAYYEM: Because it focuses our attention on the individual who committed this heinous crime, Tyler Robinson, and that he is, indeed, responsible for the death of Charlie Kirk. So don't - so everyone's going to try to find some motive or reason or his parents or guns or whatever. They're - Tyler Robinson killed someone, and he will be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. But Governor Cox also, I really have to say, met the moment. He then, you know, took a lens back and said, this talk - of the way we talk to each other about each other online and in person is essentially the talk of eradication... - that if I exist, you can't exist, or if you exist, then my existence is threatened.
And I thought Cox just sort of really - you know, and in (ph) such an important way in this time. He was sort of - at the right moment, he said, you know, touch some grass. I mean, basically, get out there and get away from all of this because fundamentally, we're all just human beings. And that was important. Updated on: September 13, 2025 / 9:54 AM EDT / CBS News Charlie Kirk's widow, Erika, vowed Friday to continue her husband's conservative activism work, saying, the "movement my husband built will not die."
She said Turning Point USA will still host its fall college campus tour, and its AmericaFest conference in December will still take place. "The evildoers responsible for my husband's assassination have no idea what they have done," she said. "They killed Charlie because he preached a message of patriotism, faith and of God's merciful love. They should all know this: If you thought that my husband's mission was powerful before, you have no idea … what you just have unleashed across this entire country and this world." "The cries of this widow will echo around the world like a battle cry," she said. The FBI director sparred with Sens.
Booker and Schiff during the hearing. FBI Director Kash Patel faced questions about the assassination of conservative activist and influencer Charlie Kirk last week -- including that other people could be involved -- when he appeared before a Senate Judiciary... In his appearance, his first in two days of hearings on Capitol Hill, Patel addressed his handling of the Kirk investigation -- something he faced criticism for after he shared on social media at... Ranking Member Dick Durbin, a Democrat, slammed Patel during his opening remarks on Tuesday, saying Patel sparked "mass confusion" in his posts about Kirk's killing. Patel stood by his performance, touting the fact that Kirk's suspected shooter was caught in less than 36 hours. Patel said he directed authorities to release the photo of the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, in the Kirk shooting.
Kirk was killed in Utah on Wednesday and Robinson was apprehended after his father recognized him in photographs released by authorities, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said on Friday. His father told Robinson to turn himself in, with the 22-year-old initially saying no, but later changing his mind, officials said.
