OREM — The Utah Department of Public Safety and the FBI are conducting a joint investigation into the killing of conservative activist and Turning Point USA co-founder Charlie Kirk. Kirk was shot in the neck on Wednesday afternoon while speaking to students at Utah Valley University. Multiple videos posted on social media show Kirk was sitting under a tent in the courtyard, answering questions from the crowd, when he was shot. He died later at Timpanogos Hospital. As of Thursday evening, public safety officials were still looking for the gunman. In an evening press briefing, they shared new surveillance video of the suspected gunman running across the roof of a building, then jumping off and running away from the UVU campus.

Officials identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, 22, of Washington County, Utah. He was taken into custody Thursday night, roughly 33 hours after the shooting at Utah Valley University (UVU). Investigators said his family and a friend assisted in delivering him to law enforcement. Robinson is now booked into the Utah County Jail. At a Friday briefing, investigators described finding a Mauser Model 98 bolt-action rifle, chambered in .30-06, wrapped in a dark towel north of Campus Drive on the edge of the UVU campus. The rifle was fitted with a scope. Alongside it, they discovered bullet casings engraved with taunts and phrases, including “Hey Fascist! Catch!”, lyrics from Bella Ciao, and a crude message. One casing carried a string of arrows and symbols. Authorities also said a roommate showed them Discord messages attributed to Robinson.
The chats referenced retrieving a rifle from a drop point, leaving it wrapped in a towel, engraving bullets, changing outfits, and the weapon being “unique.” Investigators photographed the messages directly from the roommate’s device. The suspect in custody in connection with the assassination of Charlie Kirk is a 22-year-old from Utah, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Authorities have identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation. More than 7,000 leads and tips had poured in as authorities responded to the latest act of political violence to convulse the United States. A Mauser .30-caliber, bolt-action rifle was found in a towel in the woods. A spent cartridge was recovered from the chamber, and three other rounds were loaded in the magazine, according to information circulated among law enforcement and described to The Associated Press.
