Generative AI offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance classroom interaction, personalize learning experiences, and foster an innovative learning environment for our students. We are excited to share our guidebook for the responsible adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) across our District. The AI Guidebook outlines our initial approach to GenAI integration, including guidelines for ethical use and pedagogical strategies. This guidebook will be regularly reviewed and revised to reflect stakeholder input, best practices, and advances in GenAI technology. CPS is committed to integrating these tools ethically and responsibly, ensuring that they align with our educational goals and standards while upholding the safety and privacy of our community. CPS will also support faculty and staff with professional development opportunities to support its implementation.
Our guidance governs the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), software, and models by employees, students, contractors, volunteers, and third-party vendors. It ensures that all interactions with AI technologies are conducted in accordance with CPS standards. Our goal is for CPS staff to remain at the forefront of emerging GenAI technologies and their applications in education. To this end, opportunities for continual professional learning will be provided to staff starting in 2024. CPS is shaping the future of education through the thoughtful and responsible integration of AI across the District. Grounded in equity, ethics, and innovation, our approach ensures AI supports student success, empowers educators, and enhances school operations.
In addition to our graduate degree programs in Applied AI, nearly all of our 70+ programs at CPS have some form of AI learning integrated into the curriculum. Some of those include: Gain the knowledge, skills, and confidence to harness the transformative power of AI, no matter your industry or academic background. This program requires an additional nine semester hours of credit, with courses providing intensive, hands-on guidance into the essential knowledge required for the MPS in Applied AI. As educators and students adopt AI, developing policies and guidelines is crucial to realizing AI’s benefits while mitigating risks. While such a policy is always an ongoing work-in-progress, CPS has made a significant commitment to developing actionable and tactical GenAI guidance for their 634 schools serving more than 300,000 students. Issue(s): Aurora Institute, Learn Lessons from the Field This summer, eighteen Chicago Public School (CPS) students and alumni served as summer interns for a partnership program developed by One Summer Chicago’s Everyone Can Code + Create Program and CPS’ Department of Competency-Based... International Artificial Intelligence (AI) expert, Paul Hamilton, led the course – Beyond Imagination: Exploring the Boundaries of Creativity with AI-Assisted Tools. This course focused on integrating CBE competencies & practices with those of work-based learning and other relevant external partner programs. This program was a partnership between the CPS’ Grading & Proficiency Based Learning (CBE) Team, Apple’s Everyone Can Code + Create Program, Illinois Tech University, CPS’ Work-Based Learning Team, the Boys & Girls Clubs... Citywide program coordination was facilitated by Daniel Yao.
Teacher Molly Hintz served as the CPS CBE Summer Program Coordinator. Illinois Tech students and alumni of the Summer 2023 One Summer Chicago’s Everyone Can Code + Create, Khayla Erediauwa and Angelica Viramontes, served as teaching assistants. During this hybrid program, interns participated in virtual and in-person AI and Competency-Based Education (CBE) sessions. Hamilton led students through an exploration of a variety of web-based AI software, including Canva, Spline, Kaiber, Spatial, and Padlet. There was emphasis on examining AI tools beyond ChatGPT, particularly investigating the impact of ethics and creativity in original product creation. He shared the importance of becoming a “prompt engineer” in order for creatives to get the best output for their projects.
The pace was fast! Students only had six weeks to learn, navigate, and select from at least thirteen AI platforms. The program culminated in a final AI and creativity project presented at the 2024 Sandbox Showcase. You can check out the final AI & Creativity Project Videos for all of the students here. Students worked on a variety of topics from using AI to learn new languages or how to build office environments to creating diverse AI cartoon characters & posters for school-based robotics teams. Student Empowerment: Students will use district-approved, developmentally appropriate AI tools with teacher permission with a focus on fostering AI literacy while maintaining academic integrity. 5.
Commitment to Professional Development: CPS commits to ongoing staff training beginning in summer 2024, jointly developed by Teaching and Learning and ITS. 7. IT Best Practices: The guidebook outlines robust protocols for the development and management of AI software within the district as aligned to key legislation like SOPPA and the Ed Tech Catalog. 8. Phased Implementation with Ongoing Refinement: Full GenAI integration is planned for the 2025-2026 school year, with 2024-2025 serving as a learning period. Both offices have committed to regular updates of the guidebook, ensuring it evolves with technological advancements and educational needs.

A growing number of tools that educators and students use daily are now supercharged with generative artificial intelligence, reshaping everything from lesson planning to how students complete assignments. At the same time, skeptics and critics of generative AI are raising concerns about the downsides of relying on the technology, such as a decline in critical thinking skills, students cheating or offloading work,... Still, many AI advocates are encouraging schools to experiment with the fast-evolving technology and teach educators and students how to use it responsibly. How can schools find a balance between the potential AI tools have in improving teaching and learning, and the troubling downsides that could come with more teachers, students, and parents using the technology?
