Maye through his first season and a quarter: 316-of-461, 68.5%, 3,264 yards, 7.1 yards per attempt, 22 touchdown passes, 12 interceptions, 93.8 passer rating, 47 sacks, 7 fumbles lost, 78 rushing attempts, 519 rushing... ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Stefon Diggs was still in his uniform, sitting in a visitor’s locker inside Highmark Stadium. The wide receiver was high on adrenaline following the Patriots 23-20 comeback win over the heavily favored Buffalo Bills, and he couldn’t hold back.

“Drake Maye is a gamer,” Diggs yelled out. “Damn, he’s a gamer.” As Patriots players reveled in their victory, they also celebrated their young quarterback. In front of a packed Highmark Stadium against a Super Bowl-contending division rival, Maye found himself up against Josh Allen, the reigning MVP and the quarterback many compared him to. After heading into halftime with 89 passing yards and too many stalled drives to count, Maye came out in the second half and showed the world why he’s the man many believe will lead... Ever since Drake Maye became the starting quarterback at North Carolina, he has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen.

Those comparisons didn’t stop in college. When Maye was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, they only grew louder. As he enters his second year in the league, Maye is finally speaking out about the Allen comparisons. Being compared to Josh Allen is never a bad thing, especially when you’re a young up-and-coming quarterback in the NFL like Drake Maye. Allen has been a superstar since he entered the league in 2018, throwing for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns in seven seasons, and winning the NFL MVP in 2024.

While it’s something Maye can take pride in, he made it clear on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast that he knows he hasn’t earned those comparisons yet. To those who saw Sunday night's signature win for the Patriots over the Bills in Buffalo as a breakout performance for second-year QB Drake Maye, welcome to the party. Last week, we wrote that Maye was making the year-two leap right before our eyes following a rout of the Panthers, where the second-year quarterback posted a 93.3 QBR (out of 100). During his rookie season, there were flashes of Maye's franchise quarterback potential. However, the offense wasn't ready to support his talents, and the then first-year passer was going through the typical rookie growing pains of staying aggressive while keeping the ball out of harm's way. This season, Maye has been rapidly improving in all areas, heading into Week 5 as the third-best passer in the league in total expected points added (EPA, +33.9).

The former first-round pick was hitting all the layups within the offense's structure, playmaking on the move and inside the pocket and the turnover-worthy plays were beginning to settle down. After five weeks, he is now sixth in expected points added per drop-back (+0.29), and following another turnover-free performance, Maye is now ninth-best in turnover-worthy play rate among 33 qualified QBs (2.0%). Although all the signs were there before Sunday night's win, Maye's primetime performance had a few newer developments. The most obvious is that the Pats QB recorded his first game-winning drive of his young career against a playoff-caliber opponent. From this perspective, there were even more "put the team on his back" moments compared to Maye's first four games this season. By my count, Maye had 11 'plus' plays, including seven in the final two quarters.

That's not unusual for Maye, per se, but OC Josh McDaniels was cooking things up scheme-wise over the last few weeks. In the first four weeks of the season, Maye had a high rate of "open window" throws thanks to McDaniels scheming open receivers. On Sunday night, Maye was elevating the scheme, with multiple off-script dimes and a career-high four big-time throws. For example, Maye made a miraculous throw while being dragged down to hit WR Stefon Diggs in the flat (12 yards) and hit the cover-two hole shot to Kayshon Boutte (19 yards) to get... Maye had to beat Buffalo with traditional drop-back passing, and he passed the litmus test against the undefeated Bills with flying colors. Josh Allen has almost as many Top 5 NFL MVP finishes (4) as Drake Maye has career wins (5).

But that isn't stopping some analysts from drawing a comparison between the two quarterbacks in advance of the AFC East game between the Buffalo Bills and New England Patriots Sunday night at Highmark Stadium. Both have similar size — Allen 6-foot-5 and 240 pounds; Maye 6-foot-4 and 225 pounds — and cannons for arms. With a combined five rushing touchdowns, neither is afraid to leave the pocket. "I don't know if I necessarily agree with that," Vrabel said this week. "I think that we want Drake to play quarterback, and that's to work the progression, work the scheme of the play. I've never said not to run, just to protect himself and to protect the ball. So, I don't necessarily agree with that. If Maye continues to improve, it could set the stage for a new rivalry in the AFC East for years to come.
