“I would say it’s an even bigger moment for Drake Maye,” Patriots insider Phil Perry said on Patriots Postgame Live following the Week 5 verdict. “You get the ball with two minutes left. It’s a tie game against a team that everybody thinks is going to the Super Bowl and you make two special throws, in my opinion.” Maye and the offense took the field with 2:12 remaining in a tie game and proceeded to lead a crunch-time scoring drive, as the Patriots gained 37 yards on seven plays before rookie Andy... Maye opened the possession with a hard-earned completion to wide receiver Stefon Diggs (10 catches, 146 yards) all while being dragged to the ground by Bills defensive tackle DaQuan Jones. It reset the chains.
Maye followed it up and connected with Kayshon Boutte on a 19-yard pass down the sideline two plays later. Boutte’s reception set New England up at the Buffalo 39-yard line. ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. – Stefon Diggs was still in his uniform, sitting in a visitor’s locker inside Highmark Stadium. The wide receiver was high on adrenaline following the Patriots 23-20 comeback win over the heavily favored Buffalo Bills, and he couldn’t hold back. “Drake Maye is a gamer,” Diggs yelled out.
“Damn, he’s a gamer.” As Patriots players reveled in their victory, they also celebrated their young quarterback. In front of a packed Highmark Stadium against a Super Bowl-contending division rival, Maye found himself up against Josh Allen, the reigning MVP and the quarterback many compared him to. After heading into halftime with 89 passing yards and too many stalled drives to count, Maye came out in the second half and showed the world why he’s the man many believe will lead... Drake Maye let the world know on Sunday night what all of Tar Heel Nation already knows: The former UNC football star quarterback out dueled reigning NFL MVP Josh Allen on prime time, leading the New England Patriots to an upset victory over the previously unbeaten Buffalo Bills.
Maye was simply a walking highlight reel throughout the game, making insane throws like the one featured in the clip below: This throw and catch 😍(via @NFL)pic.twitter.com/UqMiYInI0R When the pressure was on in the second half, Maye was at his best. Playing in front of one of the most hostile environments in all of football, the former Tar Heel wasn't fazed one bit, connecting on 13 of his 14 passing attempts for 184 yards, including... If there was any weight placed upon Drake Maye’s shoulders on Sunday night, the Patriots’ young quarterback wasn’t showing it while fielding questions from Highmark Stadium. Yes, Sunday marked the most consequential game of the 23-year-old QB’s career. A primetime matchup. On the road. Against the reigning NFL MVP and the lone undefeated team left in the league. The New England Patriots entered their Week 5 Sunday Night Football matchup against the Buffalo as significant underdogs.
Not only were the Patriots on the road, but they were also going up against the undefeated Bills and the reigning NFL MVP, Josh Allen. None of that fazed Drake Maye, however, who led New England to a shocking 23-20 upset in his first career primetime game. The 23-year-old quarterback delivered one of the best performances of his young career thus far, completing 22 of 30 passes for 273 yards and a 101.1 passer rating. He also added 12 yards on three rushing attempts. The big key for Maye was not making any major mistakes. He didn’t turn the ball over and played a clean game, hitting 73.3% of his passes and keeping the chains moving.
Meanwhile, Allen turned the ball over twice via an interception and a fumble. He played well otherwise with over 300 total yards (passing and rushing) and two touchdown passes, but it wasn’t enough.
