patriots qb drake maye responds to josh allen comparisons

New England Patriots second-year pro Drake Maye is establishing his identity as a quarterback in the NFL. Many pundits around the league have compared Maye to Buffalo Bills star Josh Allen, his quarterback counterpart in New England's Week 5 matchup, but Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel has his own take on... "I don't know if I necessarily agree with that. I think that we want Drake to play quarterback, and that's to work the progression, work the scheme of the play. I've never said not to run, just to protect himself and to protect the ball. So, I don't necessarily agree with that," Vrabel said.

"And then with Josh Allen, I think he's going to play quarterback how he feels gives him the best chance to win and lead his team to victory each week, which has been pretty... The two are strong pocket passers with arm strength for days, but that is where the comparison usually stops. Maye also reacted to the idea of him and Allen being similar quarterbacks. "You watch a lot of the same tape being in the division. You see the Bills show up a lot, and they kind of have the same type of offense. Any time you watch those quarterbacks around the league playing at a high level like that, you try to learn something," Maye said.

New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has been humble when it comes to getting compared to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Back in June, Allen said Maye was "super talented" and one of his "favorite young quarterbacks" in the NFL. Maye clearly holds the reigning league MVP in high regard as well. The second-year quarterback was asked about the comparisons during a recent appearance on Bussin' With The Boys. “He’s the MVP. …I’ve got a lot of work to do to even be in the same stratosphere as Josh.

Luckily, he’s in the division, so we have some good matchups I’m looking forward to," said Maye. "But really, comparisons, I’m just trying to be myself and at the end of the day, if some people think that, that’s a lot of respect for him. But, I got a lot of work to do for that.” If Maye continues to improve, it could set the stage for a new rivalry in the AFC East for years to come. Ever since Drake Maye became the starting quarterback at North Carolina, he has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Those comparisons didn’t stop in college.

When Maye was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, they only grew louder. As he enters his second year in the league, Maye is finally speaking out about the Allen comparisons. Being compared to Josh Allen is never a bad thing, especially when you’re a young up-and-coming quarterback in the NFL like Drake Maye. Allen has been a superstar since he entered the league in 2018, throwing for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns in seven seasons, and winning the NFL MVP in 2024. While it’s something Maye can take pride in, he made it clear on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast that he knows he hasn’t earned those comparisons yet.

Drake Maye backs his head coach when addressing the media on Wednesday ahead of the Patriots matchup with the Bills. The New England Patriots will play the rival Buffalo Bills in two of their final three games of the 2024 NFL season, including Sunday afternoon's matchup at Highmark Stadium. The Bills sit atop the AFC East with a 11-3 record, and they just defeated the NFC-leading Detroit Lions 48-42 on the road in Week 15. Much of the Bills' success stems from the elite performance of quarterback Josh Allen, who is the favorite to win league MVP for the first time. Allen is completing 64.4 percent of his passes for 3,395 yards with 25 touchdowns and just five interceptions. He's also making plays running the ball, with 484 yards (5.3 per carry) and 11 touchdowns on the ground.

He's been unstoppable for most of the season. Subscribe to NBC Sports Boston's podcast network to hear our Insiders bring you the latest insights on your favorite teams! We are pretty far-removed from the New England Patriots having to worry about finding the next Tom Brady or even coming up with an answer after the Mac Jones era seemed to flop. Now, the Patriots' franchise quarterback is truly cementing himself as "the guy," regardless of any past names who have come through the building. Drake Maye is here. He has arrived.

He is the future of this franchise, and everybody in that locker room knows it. With a signature win over the division rival Buffalo Bills on Sunday Night Football, Maye continues to inspire belief not only within the fan base, but also among his closest teammates. After the game on Monday night, wide receiver Stefon Diggs was asked about Maye and the comparison he's received to another one of his former quarterbacks, Josh Allen. Diggs acknowledged the comparison, but also offered some high, individual praise for his current quarterback. "I feel like it's a hell of a comparison to be compared to Josh Allen, but as you come into your own, Drake Maye has to be Drake Maye," Diggs told the media. Everyone knows the narrative surrounding Diggs before his arrival New England.

Shoot, even as recently as this past summer, there were off-field questions surrounding the polarizing wideout. There’s been a lot of chatter this week ahead of the Patriots’ upcoming AFC East clash - specifically about how Drake Maye stacks up next to Josh Allen. On paper, it’s an easy comparison to make. Both are big-bodied quarterbacks with live arms and mobility to spare. But while some league observers continue to frame Maye as New England’s answer to Allen, Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel isn’t buying into that narrative. “I don’t know if I necessarily agree with that,” Vrabel said, when asked about the Allen-Maye comp.

“I think we want Drake to play quarterback - work the progression, work the scheme. I’ve never said he shouldn't run, just that he has to protect himself and protect the ball.” Vrabel’s response makes it clear: the Patriots aren’t asking Maye to be a Josh Allen clone. They’re asking him to be a decisive, disciplined quarterback who operates within the system and takes care of the football. That’s not a knock on Allen - Vrabel actually gave the Bills QB his due, adding that Allen plays the game in a way that gives his team a real chance to win each... But in New England, they’re building something different, and Maye is being coached accordingly.

Drake Maye dealt with the comparison even before the New England Patriots selected him No. 3 overall.

But it’s even more in Maye’s face this week as the lousy Patriots get set to face the division-rival Buffalo Bills on Sunday in a Week 16 matchup. Maye is looked at as a Josh Allen prototype. The two quarterbacks play a similar style, with powerful arms capable of making all the throws and an ability to make plays with their legs all the while possessing a gunslinger’s mentality. Maye is still looking to cement himself in the NFL, though, while Allen is running away with the league’s MVP award in his seventh season. And that sizable gap doesn’t go unnoticed by Maye. “I think I’ve got a long way to go,” Maye told reporters at Gillette Stadium on Wednesday, per team-provided transcript.

“What a player he is, playing at an MVP level. I think the biggest thing is just the progression he’s made. I think what he dealt with, whether coming out of college or his first years here, I feel like everybody was just kind of not giving him the credit he deserved. Now, you can see kind of the full fruition of what he’s doing and the level he’s playing at. Just, like I said, fun to watch, and I think I’ve got a long way to go to get to anywhere close to playing at his level.”
