NEW YORK − Zohran Mamdani, a democratic socialist who shot to stardom and shook up Democratic politics, has won the race for mayor of New York City. The race was called for Mamdani around 9:30 p.m. on Nov. 4, and his chief opponent, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, later conceded in a combative speech to supporters. Before a roaring crowd at the Brooklyn Paramount theater, Mamdani thanked young New Yorkers for believing "that the promise of a better future is not a relic of the past" in a speech that...
“We are breathing in the air of a city that has been reborn,” he said. "I wish Andrew Cuomo only the best in private life," Mamdani said. “But let tonight be the final time I utter his name as we turn the page on politics that abandons the many and answers only to the few.” Democratic nominee Zohran Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who ran as a third-party candidate, after also defeating Cuomo in a June primary. Republican Curtis Sliwa was also in the race.
Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams was also running as a third-party hopeful but dropped out of the race this fall, though his name still appeared on ballots. Experts say Zohran Mamdani picked up some new support in NYC areas that were skewing for President Donald Trump last year NEW YORK (WABC) -- Election analysts say Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani's win signals a generational change - a majority of younger, educated people voted for him. He also picked up some new support in areas that were skewing for President Donald Trump last year. A record number of people voted in the mayoral election, more than 2 million residents. How many of those voters cast their ballots has changed since the presidential election. In 2024, President Trump caused more of New York City to go red in areas that have been democratic strongholds.
As for the mayoral election, while Cuomo did well in areas like Staten Island, Crown Heights and the Upper East Side, Mamdani had big wins in most other areas.
