He said his win was one for the working people of New York and reiterated his campaign promises on affordability. "Let the words we've spoken together, the dreams we've dreamt together, become the agenda we deliver together," Mamdani said. "New York, this power, it's yours. This city belongs to you.

Andrew Cuomo, who ran as a third-party candidate, after also defeating Cuomo in a June primary. Republican Curtis Sliwa was also in the race. Incumbent Mayor Eric Adams was also running as a third-party hopeful but dropped out of the race this fall, though his name still appeared on ballots.

ABC News projects Democratic candidate Zohran Mamdani will win the race for New York City mayor, in a history-making victory over former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, a Democrat who was running as an independent, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa. Mamdani, 34, a state Assemblyman and democratic socialist who campaigned on a progressive economic platform, is set to become the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor in an election that saw more than... With about 60% of the expected vote reporting, Mamdani was leading with 50% of the vote, followed by Cuomo at 42% and Sliwa with 8%. Mamdani had remained the front-runner since clinching the Democratic primary and notched key endorsements from figures such as Gov. Kathy Hochul.
But he faced some backlash over the feasibility of his proposals and current or former views on issues such as policing. His economic and anti-establishment views resonated with a voter base increasingly fed up with the status quo -- so much so that officials say turnout was the largest it had been in 50 years. Zohran Mamdani will be New York City's 111th mayor. According to the Associated Press, with nearly 90% of the expected vote counted, Mamdani has 50.4% of the vote, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has 41.6% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has 7.1%. Mamdani will be the first Muslim and first person of South Asian descent to serve as mayor. At the age of 34, he is also the youngest mayor in the past 100 years. Addressing his supporters after becoming the projected winner of the mayor's race, Mamdani said “the future is in our hands.”
“Over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater,” he said. “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands.
