Zohran Mamdani will be New York City's 111th mayor. According to the Associated Press, with nearly 90% of the expected vote counted, Mamdani has 50.4% of the vote, former Gov. Andrew Cuomo has 41.6% and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa has 7.1%. Mamdani will be the first Muslim and first person of South Asian descent to serve as mayor. At the age of 34, he is also the youngest mayor in the past 100 years. Addressing his supporters after becoming the projected winner of the mayor's race, Mamdani said “the future is in our hands.”

“Over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater,” he said. “Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty.” Voters headed to the polls in states across the U.S. on Tuesday — and Democrats came out victorious.

In New York City, voters elected Zohran Mamdani, a 34-year-old state Assembly member and democratic socialist, as their next mayor. Mamdani defeated former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, who joined the race as an independent after losing in the Democratic primary. Democrats also won both of the governor’s races that were on the ballot. Abigail Spanberger, a former U.S. representative, was elected in Virginia to replace outgoing Republican Glenn Youngkin.
