Northeastern University Library Artificial Intelligence
Northeastern University Library (NUL) stands at the forefront of digital transformation in teaching, learning, research, and scholarly communication. NUL envisions a future where artificial intelligence serves as a catalyst for intellectual discovery, enhancing scholarly pursuits while deeply rooted in core library values of accessibility, equity, and critical inquiry, and truth-seeking. Through strategic external partnerships and interdisciplinary collaborations, NUL is pioneering AI integrations across numerous domains: Scite-AI: An AI-powered research platform that analyzes and provides citation context for scientific papers. Scite is built on a database of 1.2 billion citations from 200 million full-text peer-reviewed articles.* Scopus AI: Enter a natural language query and receive results from the largest multidisciplinary abstract and citation database including graphical representations showing connections among keywords, pointers to influential papers, and suggested related queries to...

This is an ever changing arena but Generative AI offers some interesting ways to approach research. It is important to remember though, the systems are trained on sources it has access to. Pay attention to when the system trained on the data and what it was trained on. There is still a large amount of literature that is unavailable. This section aims to highlight a few resources covering topics related to health care, education and the uses of the various types that will undoubtedly continue to grow and change, Library databases and many other resources are adding AI features.
The function varies. Some provide research assistance, others create a summary of the content displayed, similar to Google or other search engines. Below are two resources that have specific research functions that are licensed through the library. The library licenses Scite.ai in the spring of 2024. It's resources are heavily STEM related. One key feature is the analysis of articles/publications that have cited a particular work.
The results will show supporting or refuting the original article. Scite Assistant interfaces with a ChatGPT feature to help answer questions related to the included content. Captions play a key role in making audio and video content accessible. They benefit not only deaf and hard-of-hearing users, but also second-language learners, researchers scanning interviews, and anyone viewing content in noisy environments. At the Northeastern University Library, we manage a growing archive of media from lectures and events to oral histories. Manually creating captions for all of this content is not a scalable solution, and outsourcing the task to third party services can be expensive, time-consuming, and inconsistent.
Motivated by this, we have been exploring AI-powered speech-to-text tools that could generate high-quality captions more efficiently and cost-effectively. We started by testing Autosub, an open-source tool for generating subtitles. Even using a maintained fork (copies of the original project that add features, fix bugs, or adapt the code for different use cases), Autosub did not offer significant time savings, and it was eventually... In summer 2023, the team began using OpenAI’s Whisper, which immediately cut captioning time in half. However, it lacked key features like speaker diarization (the process of segmenting a speech signal based on the identity of the speakers), and it often stumbled on long stretches of music or background noise... As the AI for Digital Collections co-op on the Digital Production Services (DPS) team, I was responsible for researching and testing Whisper forks that could be realistically adopted by our team.
I tested model performance, wrote scripts to automate captioning, debugged issues, and prepared tools for long-term use within our infrastructure. A human-centric approach to artificial intelligence (AI) – unlocking the power of AI in academics, research, and the workplace. Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how people work, play, and discover new opportunities. By emphasizing human ingenuity, you can unlock AI’s full potential to drive productivity and innovation in your life and organization. Whether you are a student, a researcher, or a business, CPS can empower you, your team, and your community to thrive in an evolving world.
As of August 8, 2025, the AI Guidance, Syllabus Guidelines, and AI Pledge have been updated to align with the latest Northeastern University standards. Resources to ethically and responsibly embed Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in your work. Guidance includes: New Product Development, Curriculum Development, Teaching, Assessments, and Workplace Tasks. The push to ensure artificial intelligence is deployed responsibly and ethically has largely been coming from academic researchers and legislators. That’s about to change.
The newly formed Center for Responsible Artificial Intelligence and Governance (CRAIG), which Northeastern University associate professor of philosophy and CRAIG member John Basl called a first-of-its-kind National Science Foundation-funded research effort, combines academic rigor... From technical questions around privacy to issues of regulation, CRAIG is tackling it all in a way that hasn’t been done before. “Companies don’t really have the infrastructure for that,” said Basl, who represents one of four partner universities leading CRAIG. “What companies have the infrastructure for is the compliance bit, complying with existing laws. So, the idea was to create a center that was drawing on industry challenges but bringing in academia to bear on those solutions. … This will be a call to arms to get that done.”
