how the cps will use artificial intelligence

The Crown Prosecution Service will uphold the highest legal and service standards throughout our organisation. We will use Artificial Intelligence ethically to enhance efficiency in the delivery of justice and enable our staff to work effectively. We will ensure adequate human participation in AI processes and verify the accuracy of outputs by an appropriately qualified and trained person. Individuals are responsible for each use and output generated using AI, just as they would be if an AI tool had not been used. Individual tools will have a Senior Responsible Officer and a person or individual will be responsible for each use. We will support and empower our staff in the use of AI and provide training to ensure staff are confident with the organisation’s use of AI, the use of AI within their roles and...

We will also put mechanisms in place for end-users to provide feedback on system performance and accuracy. We will ensure that our use of AI is communicated clearly to our staff, police, key Criminal Justice System and legal partners, victims, suspects, and the general public. By being transparent about the tools we use and how our data and evidence are utilised, we aim to increase public confidence, protect data, and mitigate reputational risks. Generative AI offers unprecedented opportunities to enhance classroom interaction, personalize learning experiences, and foster an innovative learning environment for our students. We are excited to share our guidebook for the responsible adoption of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI) across our District. The AI Guidebook outlines our initial approach to GenAI integration, including guidelines for ethical use and pedagogical strategies.

This guidebook will be regularly reviewed and revised to reflect stakeholder input, best practices, and advances in GenAI technology. CPS is committed to integrating these tools ethically and responsibly, ensuring that they align with our educational goals and standards while upholding the safety and privacy of our community. CPS will also support faculty and staff with professional development opportunities to support its implementation. Our guidance governs the use of generative artificial intelligence (GenAI), software, and models by employees, students, contractors, volunteers, and third-party vendors. It ensures that all interactions with AI technologies are conducted in accordance with CPS standards. Our goal is for CPS staff to remain at the forefront of emerging GenAI technologies and their applications in education.

To this end, opportunities for continual professional learning will be provided to staff starting in 2024. CPS is shaping the future of education through the thoughtful and responsible integration of AI across the District. Grounded in equity, ethics, and innovation, our approach ensures AI supports student success, empowers educators, and enhances school operations. As we integrate AI into the District, we are embracing it's potential with a clear principles, vision and purpose.

Our outlook establishes a thoughtful foundation for responsible use—ensuring AI supports student learning, empowers educators, and strengthens operations while maintaining the District’s high standards for equity, integrity, and innovation. Our AI Principles provide a foundation for the responsible, inclusive, and effective use of artificial intelligence in education. Grounded in equity, ethics, and continuous improvement, these principles guide how AI is integrated into classrooms, operations, and decision-making—ensuring that its impact supports students, empowers educators, and strengthens our communities. Equitable and accessible AI education ensures that all students, educators, and families—regardless of background—can engage with, benefit from, and help shape the future of AI. Ethical and transparent AI practices prioritize fairness, accountability, and privacy while ensuring users understand how AI systems work. Human-centered and socially beneficial AI in education enhances learning while keeping people at the core.

These approaches prioritize personalization, human oversight, and long-term societal impact. Want to partner with AI for Education to create AI guidance at your school or district? LEARN HOW Last week, Chicago Public Schools (CPS) announced the release of the first version of its AI Guidebook, developed in partnership between the Office of Teaching and Learning, the Department of Information and Technology Services... As educators and students adopt AI, developing policies and guidelines is crucial to realizing AI’s benefits while mitigating risks. While such a policy is always an ongoing work-in-progress, CPS has made a significant commitment to developing actionable and tactical GenAI guidance for their 634 schools serving more than 300,000 students.

We are privileged to have partnered with the district on this important work and to be able to share it with education leaders. Mary Beck, the Deputy Chief of Teaching and Learning of CPS, says, "the goal of our AI guide is to further enhance the daily student learning experience by empowering teachers with ways to increase... Key highlights of the guidebook include: In this section, we outline clear guidelines to ensure that our studentsuphold the values of CPS when using AI. While responsible GenAI use can assist in learning, students should submit work that is fundamentally their own. Students should clearly identify any AI-generated content that they have used in their assignments.

Students are required to cite the use of GenAI in their academic work and specify how they used it. Failing to do so will be considered a violation of the Student Code of Conduct and will be addressed on a case-by-case basis according to individual school policy. School reviews of each case will generally include: Students must use GenAI tools ethically. Students should never use GenAI tools to create inappropriate or harmful content. Students must follow the Student Acceptable Use Policy whenever they use GenAI tools, just as they should when using any other information technology resources.

Violations of these guidelines, including the misuse of AI to generate offensive or damaging material, will result in disciplinary actions, which may range from a warning to more severe penalties depending on the nature... Usage of GenAI tools will be governed under the SOPPA model, wherein teachers are responsible for monitoring student use of approved technologies. Misuse of GenAI tools will be addressed in accordance with the Student Acceptable Use Policy and CPS’ Student Code of Conduct, which may include warnings or removal of access to tools. These guidelines ensure that students at CPS use GenAI technologies responsibly, contributing positively to their educational environment. Students may only use GenAI tools that have been vetted and approved by CPS, as reflected in the CPS Ed Tech Catalog. A human-centric approach to artificial intelligence (AI) – unlocking the power of AI in academics, research, and the workplace.

Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reshaping how people work, play, and discover new opportunities. By emphasizing human ingenuity, you can unlock AI’s full potential to drive productivity and innovation in your life and organization. Whether you are a student, a researcher, or a business, CPS can empower you, your team, and your community to thrive in an evolving world. As of August 8, 2025, the AI Guidance, Syllabus Guidelines, and AI Pledge have been updated to align with the latest Northeastern University standards.

Resources to ethically and responsibly embed Generative AI and Large Language Models (LLMs) in your work. Guidance includes: New Product Development, Curriculum Development, Teaching, Assessments, and Workplace Tasks. The Crown Prosecution Service is using generative artificial intelligence to draft some of its emails and letters to people involved in prosecutions, with the aim of increasing the quality of its communications and increasing... Its Correspondence Drafting Tool is currently used by 30 trained CPS staff to generate first drafts by populating specified templates with automatically generated summaries and mandatory information. Staff then edit these drafts with a further review and approval process before sending. The CPS stressed that the AI service plays no part in legal decisions.

“The tool does not impact decision making nor provide output which is used for decision making,” it said in a case study published on GOV.UK. The tool was co-developed by NTT Data, CPS’s digital delivery partner, which provided expertise in AI model integration, natural language processing, data management and integration with existing CPS systems. It uses Microsoft OpenAI’s GPT4 large language model version 0125 to simplify legal text into accessible language and to select templates, with no further development, training or fine tuning of the model. Data is stored within the tool until correspondence is finalised at which point it is deleted. The CPS said that such correspondence was previously drafted in Microsoft Word and involved manual transfers of information, which left potential for errors. While it recognised the risk of AI hallucinations it said this is mitigated by staff checking the output, comprehensive training and guidance as well as regular audits and management checks.

It considered alternatives but decided that the contextual nature of correspondence made large language models most suitable for the work. The Chicago Public Schools (CPS) AI Guidebook outlines how to responsibly integrate Generative AI (GenAI) in the classroom and beyond. Here are the main takeaways: 📚 Responsible adoption: CPS is focused on ethical and pedagogical use of GenAI to enhance learning while maintaining safety and privacy standards. 🎓 Student guidance: Students are encouraged to use approved AI tools, ensuring transparency by citing AI-generated content in their assignments while avoiding misuse. 🛡️ Privacy and security: Teachers and staff are advised never to input confidential data into AI tools, as these could be used for further training by AI providers.

👩‍🏫 Educator support: CPS will offer professional development and resources to help educators responsibly integrate AI into their teaching. by Uwe Hohgrawe, Associate Dean of Global Learner Access, Strategic Partnerships and AI Artificial Intelligence (AI) I is an integral part of our world, with the magnificent potential to become our trusted digital companion. As such, its impact on education and organizational competitiveness cannot be overstated. To harness AI’s potential while mitigating its undeniable risks, the College of Professional Studies (CPS) is introducing AI guidelines, literacy programs, and other supporting resources. These efforts serve as an opportunity to connect and learn from each other with the goal of providing and promoting access to and navigation through the future of AI.

We will continue to build on the experiences of the colleagues that laid the first stone, and the AI guidelines are a great example of that. The primary goals of creating those AI guidelines are to provide certainty, support, and a safe environment for experimentation. These guidelines aim to showcase AI’s opportunities while addressing concerns and unease about navigating the technology. Beyond the guidelines, our overarching goal is to integrate AI in everything we do at CPS. It’s an essential part of the future competitive landscape of any professional field. It is something that we are obliged to offer our students by ensuring the highest level of rigor, quality, and discipline, to prepare them well for the workforce.

Strategically, the College of Professional Studies at Northeastern like any other successful organization needs to conduct a lawful, ethical, profitable and sustainable operation. This creates long-term value for current and future students, staff, and faculty. We need to understand market needs, ensuring access to high quality, scalable, innovative, programs including the latest technology. By integrating AI into our programs, products, and services we create the opportunity to expand our leadership and enhance the success of our students who cannot afford to fall behind in an increasingly competitive...
