Welcome to the Illinois Early Intervention Training Program. Below you will find some helpful information that will help you navigate the requirements for new providers in the Illinois Early Intervention System. The Illinois Interagency Council on Early Intervention's "Principles of Early Intervention" guide the outcomes we hope to achieve through Early Intervention and our Early Intervention Training Model. All early interventionists in Illinois should adhere to these principles as they serve children and families. Early Interventionists may want to reflect on what each principles means to them and what it looks like in practice. This activity can be done individually, with peers, and with families.

Launched in September 2022, Be Part of Early Intervention has resources to help explore EI professions and a mailing list to join. The Be Part of EI video provides an overview of early intervention and explains how you may be able to help a family in early intervention. Additionally, this video from Personnel Improvement Center at NASDSE provides information about careers in early intervention, focusing on interviews with specialists themselves. The required Illinois Early Intervention System Overview trainings listed below must be completed within the 3 years prior to applying for an Illinois Early Intervention Credential. If completed more than 3 years before applying for the credential, individuals will need to repeat both.
EITP sponsors numerous training events each year that support the mission and vision of the Illinois Early Intervention System. Our "Non-EITP Events" calendar also includes events from other sponsoring entities that have been reviewed by EITP for Early Intervention credit. These events are shared as training resources to the field. These reviewed events are posted to our training calendar as a courtesy not as an endorsement. Please check the calendar for the amount of credit for each event. Training events may be face-to-face or online.

Susan Connor, Ed.M. is the Director and Principal Investigator of the Early Intervention Training Program (EITP) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. As Directorand Principal Investigator, Susan ensures high-quality, evidence-based professional development opportunities and resources are available to early interventionists in the field.

Susan partners with the Lead Agency to respond to the needs of the larger system and works collaboratively with a variety of stakeholder groups including early intervention, education, child welfare, child care, home visiting,... Susan holds a bachelor's degree in Human Development and Family Studies and a master's degree in Early Childhood Special Education with an emphasis on infants, toddlers, and families. She has worked in early intervention for more than 20 years as a service coordinator, developmental specialist, manager, and professional development specialist and is guided by ensuring equitable access to capacity-building supports for families... Chelsea Guillen, M.S. is the Early Intervention Ombudsman with the Early Intervention Training Program (EITP) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign.
As the Ombudsman, Chelsea promotes high quality Early Intervention practices which support state and federal principles of Early Intervention by working with Bureau staff, Child and Family Connections (CFC) offices, Early Intervention Partners and... She also collaborates with other systems and specialists in the State (e.g., serves on committees) on issues related to the field of early intervention and early childhood special education. She currently serves as the co-chair of the Division for Early Childhood's Recommended Practices Committee and as an Early Childhood Technical Assistance aRPy Ambassador. Chelsea holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology and a master's degree in Child Development with an Infancy Specialization. She has worked in early intervention for more than 25 years as a developmental specialist, program director, grant coordinator, and professional development specialist. She has also participated in early intervention as a parent.
Her professional interests include improving child and family outcomes, implementing recommended practices, ensuring equitable access to, and participation in, early intervention services, and using data and evidence-informed strategies to inform systemic change. Her central belief in the importance of partnering with families to enhance their competence and confidence in meeting their children's needs guides all of her work. Maria Kastanis, B.A. is the Senior Assistant Director of the Early Intervention Training Program (EITP) at the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign. As Senior Assistant Director, Maria supports the director and a team of professional development specialists in ensuring that high-quality evidence-informed professional development opportunities and resources are available to early interventionists. In her role, she supports professional development specialists in developing curriculum, facilitating professional development activities, managing, and overseeing projects, and collecting and analyzing data related to the quality and effectiveness of professional development activities...
She develops and facilitates high-quality professional development experiences for early interventionists. Maria's work focuses on family-centered practices, routines-based intervention, social-emotional development, and service coordination. She supports State Systemic Improvement Plan leadership teams, and co-facilitates a statewide IL SC Forum Community of Practice. Maria holds a bachelor's degree in Psychology. She is an internationally certified Routines-Based Model trainer and a Zero to Three Growing Brain certified trainer. She has worked in early intervention for more than 20 years as a service coordinator, lead service coordinator, and professional development specialist.
Michaelene Ostrosky, Ph.D. is the Principal Investigator (PI) for the Early Intervention Training Program (EITP). The PI is responsible for management of the integrity of the design, conduct, and reporting of the research project; and for managing, monitoring, and ensuring the integrity of any collaborative relationships. Every day, thousands of early intervention professionals across the state of Illinois visit with families to offer services for children from birth through age three. The Early Intervention Training Program provides the training, support, and resources that early intervention professionals need to excel in their work. “We are a large, complex system,” says Susan Connor, director of the Early Intervention Training Program (EITP), which is housed in the College of Education’s Special Education Department. “The Illinois Early Intervention system serves anywhere from 25,000 to 27,000 families on any given day.” Early interventionists—service coordinators, occupational therapists, physical therapists, speech therapists, developmental therapists, audiologists, social workers, nutritionists, and many more—provide supports and coordination that promote the optimal development of children.
