The AI-Media Strategies Lab – AIMS Lab – focuses on the use of AI technologies in media industries, providing evidence-based recommendations to organizations, and producing research leveraging methods such as surveys, focus groups, experiments,... In this project, we build upon previous works such as Charticulator (Microsoft) and browser-based research studies to develop a two-part visual engine. The first engine generates a data stream that maps out aggregated, ecosystem-level behavior from the dataset. This stream is then used by the second visual engine to model individual behavior and introduce stochastic properties inherent in real-world scenarios. In 2023-24, Laura Forlano (A+D/Comm), Rahul Bhargava (Journalism/A+D), Sylke Meyer (Theater/A+D), Joseph Reagle (Comm), Humbi Song (Architecture), and Victor Zappi (Music) curated resources and led a series of workshops in which faculty shared approaches,...

Topics included testing the robotproofness of assignments, the utilities and limits of AI tools in creative work, implications for expressive and commercial media like photography, and balancing deep ethical concerns with exploring creative applications. While these metrics are essential for developing safe and responsible AI, they can also trap us in a constrained design space for how explanations provide value in human-AI interactions.

Furthermore, mixed results on whether XAI actually helps calibrate reliance or foster appropriate trust raise the question of whether we are designing XAI with the right goals in mind. This talk explores how we can expand the design space for XAI by moving beyond the TRAP goals. In recognition of her work at the intersection of AI and health, she was awarded a Digital Health Innovations Fellowship from the Center for Machine Learning and Health at Carnegie Mellon University. Her research experience spans industry, government, and non-profit organizations, including the Software Engineering Institute, Microsoft Research, and IBM Research. Before joining Carnegie Mellon University, Katelyn earned her bachelor’s degree in Computer Science with a certificate in Sustainability from the University of Pittsburgh. The AI-Media Strategies Lab – AIMES Lab – focuses on the use of AI technologies in media industries, providing evidence-based recommendations to organizations, and producing research leveraging methods such as surveys, focus groups, experiments,... AIMES Lab seeks to partner with and advise organizations on using AI tools to accomplish their media-related goals, in areas such as news, communications, social media, public relations, advocacy, and more. The Lab seeks to learn from external organizations and consolidate knowledge about the state of the art (applied research), as well as produce more basic research about AI technologies and their uses and perceptions...
