Media Arts Degree Project (ARTD 4530) By Carly Bates Computer-Supported Cooperative Work Conference 2025 By Menglin Zhao Assignment: Black Box By Maxine Vollertsen Assignment: Black Box By Annie Lin and Jahnavi Poddar Join CoDesign Collaborative and TJ Lippert and Jon Riehle from LOFT Design, for a workshop on October 9, 2025, from 12-1 pm ET exploring AI Workflow. Advancements within AI image generation tools are lowering the barrier to entry for others who are not in typical creative roles.
This workshop will dive into on AI’s potential applications within the physical product development process, and how Business Leaders, Stakeholders, and Designers can cross-collaborate like never before. AI Workflow is presented in partnership with the Center for Design, a CoDesign Collaborative Academic Partner, and as part of Northeastern University’s Arts, Humanities, and Tech Weeks. About TJ LippertTJ Lippert is a multi-disciplinary designer with nearly a decade of experience helping bring products and brands to life within the automotive accessory, pet, consumer electronics, professional audio markets, and much more. Currently, TJ is a Senior Industrial Designer at Loft and has previously held product and brand development roles at NOCO, Juggernaut Design, and Mediphor Design. These experiences have allowed him to work closely alongside C-suite business and product development leadership, and in recent years have provided him the opportunity to integrate AI tools into his creative process. TJ is passionate about the smallest behaviors that make up the interactions with products in our day-to-day experiences, and strives to have his designs act as an extension of ourselves to improve our lives...
About Jon RiehleJon Riehle is a designer, professor, and team leader with over a decade of experience in industrial and UI/UX design. He’s worked with companies across consumer goods, pro-audio, medtech, and digital products to create thoughtful, user-centered solutions. Currently a Senior Designer at Loft Design, Jon uses AI tools to explore ideas faster, spark creativity, and collaborate more effectively with clients. Before that, he spent nearly five years at Procter & Gamble, working closely with brand leaders and cross-functional teams at Braun and Gillette to launch innovative products that combined design thinking with emerging technologies. About AHT WeeksAHTWeeks at Northeastern, a celebration of the power of Arts, Humanities, and Tech for research, discovery, experiential learning, and co-creation with wider communities, is a three campus collaboration (Boston—London—Oakland) of the Humanities... The AI-Media Strategies Lab – AIMS Lab – focuses on the use of AI technologies in media industries, providing evidence-based recommendations to organizations, and producing research leveraging methods such as surveys, focus groups, experiments,... In this project, we build upon previous works such as Charticulator (Microsoft) and browser-based research studies to develop a two-part visual engine.
The first engine generates a data stream that maps out aggregated, ecosystem-level behavior from the dataset. This stream is then used by the second visual engine to model individual behavior and introduce stochastic properties inherent in real-world scenarios. In 2023-24, Laura Forlano (A+D/Comm), Rahul Bhargava (Journalism/A+D), Sylke Meyer (Theater/A+D), Joseph Reagle (Comm), Humbi Song (Architecture), and Victor Zappi (Music) curated resources and led a series of workshops in which faculty shared approaches,... Topics included testing the robotproofness of assignments, the utilities and limits of AI tools in creative work, implications for expressive and commercial media like photography, and balancing deep ethical concerns with exploring creative applications. Additional speakers included Meg Heckman (journalism) on machine vision tools for journalism research, David Tames (A+D/media and screen studies) on AI research tools in the use case of virtual reality research, Grisha Coleman (A+D/theater)... CAMD Faculty can continue to access resources at the Canvas site.
Students in the College of Art, Media and Design (CAMD) have many opportunities to develop projects that engage with AI, whether it is in practice, theory or a combination of both. This showcase celebrates some of our student achievements involving or reflecting on AI across our different departments. How might it feel to live intimately with AI? How might designing AI systems enhance designers' ability to innovate? How might we utilize AI to raise awareness of our biases? Join us at Design Research Week 2023 to discuss these topics and more!
