Kirk, a close political ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. As of early Sept. 11, authorities were still searching for the suspected shooter. Two people had been detained in the hours after the shooting, including one who was interrogated by law enforcement, but both were subsequently released. President Donald Trump said authorities have caught the person suspected of fatally shooting Charlie Kirk while he spoke at an event at Utah Valley University on Wednesday, Sept 10.

Trump made the announcement on Fox & Friends on Friday morning, Sept. 12. “I think with a high degree of certainty, we have him,” Trump said, while praising investigators for their efforts. The news comes a day after the FBI released photos and a video of a person of interest. The footage showed the person running across the roof of one of the university’s buildings, before jumping down and escaping the scene.
