The Washington Commanders were one of the biggest surprises of the 2024 season, fueled by Offensive Rookie of the Year Jayden Daniels. With their franchise quarterback in place — and still on a rookie contract — the future looks bright in Washington, but there’s still plenty of work to be done to strengthen the roster. While upgrading the offensive skill positions will be a priority, the Commanders also need reinforcements along the offensive line and defense. With $68.8 million in effective cap space, they’ll be a team to watch in free agency, but they should also have ample opportunities to add talent through the draft. Barron would be a major addition for the Commanders, bringing versatility and high-level ball production to the secondary. He was a standout in coverage last season, allowing just a 53.6% completion rate on throws into his coverage.
He recorded five interceptions, broke up 10 more passes and didn’t surrender a single touchdown all season. Injuries slowed Williams in the postseason, but he was outstanding throughout the 2024 regular season. In pass protection, he allowed just three sacks and two quarterback hits. Ferguson was a consistent chain-mover for the Ducks in 2024, with 31 of his 46 receptions resulting in first downs. He also proved to be a big-play threat, recording 18 explosive catches of 15 or more yards. There are still seven games remaining for the Washington Commanders in 2025.
But with the season spiraling into irrelevancy when much more was expected, some sections of the fan base are already looking ahead to what promises to be a pivotal offseason for general manager Adam... The front-office leader has a significant amount of hard work ahead. Washington has roster holes everywhere you look. Peters' gamble to run it back with most of the squad that achieved so much in 2024 has backfired. A disastrous run of luck on the injury front hasn't helped, but it's clear that this squad, as presently constructed, isn't capable of reaching the heights fans anticipated. Peters could have over $100 million to spend in free agency, and he'd be wise to use every cent before Year 3 of quarterback Jayden Daniels' rookie contract.
The Commanders stood pat at the 2025 trade deadline, which was surprising to most, leaving Peters with only six selections in next year's draft to utilize. Not exactly ideal, but the former San Francisco 49ers executive will have to make the best out of a bad situation. Using the Pro Football Network simulator, we took a look at how the Commanders could approach their selections in our latest seven-round 2026 NFL mock draft. It's no secret that the Washington Commanders need to get more explosive on the defensive edge. Only Dorance Armstrong Jr. is guaranteed to be back next season, but even the ascending defensive end is in the final year of his deal in 2026.
This offseason has been marked by huge changes for the Washington Commanders. Starting at the very top, Dan Quinn is the team's new head coach and he's cleaning house in the roster. The Commanders are a team with many needs starting with a quarterback. Sitting at the No. 2 overall pick, Washington should have their choice of three top signal callers. Here's our latest seven-round update.
The Washington Commanders went from the No. 2 overall pick to the NFC championship game in just one season thanks to making the right hires, the right moves in free agency, and the right picks in the 2024 NFL draft. With the second overall pick in the draft, Washington chose quarterback Jayden Daniels and damn-near instantly flipped the script on a franchise that had been run into the ground by former owner Daniel Snyder. New ownership, led by Josh Harris, aligned itself with a youth movement by hiring head coach Dan Quinn—who in turn hired offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury—which led to the selection of the franchise quarterback. But it wasn’t just Daniels, even if he’s the face of the team now. The Commanders drafted well in every round while setting the table for the 2024 season and the future.
That was bolstered by smart signings of linebackers Bobby Wagner and Frankie Luvu, as well as center Tyler Biadasz from the rival Dallas Cowboys. Rebuilds are rarely done in one offseason, and while the Commanders were red hot last season, the work to remain on top will be a chore; especially with the team now selecting at No. 29 overall in Round 1 instead of No. 2. Adam Peters made the aggressive moves needed to potentially keep the Washington Commanders in the Super Bowl hunt during the offseason. Unfortunately, things have not gone as anyone associated with the franchise expected. It's been one disaster after another for the Commanders at the midseason point. Injuries have decimated the roster. Young players expected to progress haven't lived up to their billing. The NFL's oldest roster looks exactly that — a massive problem holding the team back right now.
Peters opted to stand pat at the 2025 trade deadline. Fans were anticipating a couple of outgoings, given the Commanders' slow start this season. But either no suitable interest arrived, or the offers weren't enough for the front-office leader to remove certain players from the equation. The Commanders will move forward with what they have over the second half of 2025. Even so, it's clear that Peters has an awful lot of hard work ahead when the next offseason arrives to get this ambitious project back on track. Using the Pro Football Network simulator, we took an early look at how Peters might approach his draft picks in a special seven-round midseason mock.
