The Washington Commanders head into the 2024 NFL draft with nine selections, beginning with the No. 2 overall pick. Everyone is certain that the Commanders will target a quarterback with their first pick, allowing them to use their final eight selections to build around their new passer. Washington signed over 20 outside free agents since free agency kicked off last month. Most of the deals were one year in length as the Commanders just looked to fill out the roster and compete in 2024. The core of the team will be built through the draft, and fortunately for general manager Adam Peters, he has a lot to work with in this draft.

In our previous seven-round mock draft, we traded up for an offensive tackle. In our mock draft 3.0, we did things a little differently, sitting still and picking the best available player for each of Washington's nine selections. In doing so, the Commanders came away with multiple future starters in this mock draft. We've stuck with Drake Maye in previous mock drafts, and we still believe there is a good chance he's the pick on April 25. However, the smoke around Daniels is becoming difficult to ignore. Adam Schefter says most NFL teams have him as the second-best quarterback; some even have him ranked first, and he believes that will be too much for Washington to pass on.

If Daniels is the pick, he gives offensive coordinator Kliff Kingsbury a dynamic dual threat who changes Washington's offense from the moment he arrives. Daniels impacts the deep passing game and running game. The Washington Commanders have been the most unstable franchise in the NFL over the past four years. Starting with the retirement of its original name in 2020, and another rebranding as the Commanders in 2022, Washington's football team has had similar turmoil in its front office, coaching staff, and roster. The resulting on-field product has been disappointing and after a 4-13 season in 2023, Washington has reset its front office, and coaching staff, and now looks to find its franchise quarterback and other key... The Washington Commanders have a lot of holes on their roster.

They need an offensive tackle, a true number-one wide receiver, and a pass rusher on the outside. But no need is greater in all team sports than the need for a franchise quarterback on an NFL team. The Commanders could trade this pick and look to find its franchise quarterback later in the draft, the Giants (6th), Titans (7th), and Vikings (11th) would all like a chance to have their pick... But while the Commanders are likely to use some of their 9 picks in this year's draft to move up in the draft, new general manager Adam Harris and new owner Josh Harris, whose... Why Drake Maye is a better choice than Jayden Daniels Drake Maye checks all of the boxes NFL general managers, coaches, and offensive coordinators look for in a franchise quarterback.

He has prototypical size of 6'4", 225 pounds. Above average athleticism, elite arm strength, and the "intangibles" every GM and NFL decision-maker covets. Entering the 2023 college football season, Maye was the consensus number two QB in the 2024 Draft class. Maye's inconsistency in big games and Jayden Daniels's explosion into the national scene and a Heisman trophy have made many people consider Daniels the better option for the Commanders at number two. The Washington Commanders will go into the 2024 offseason with a new head coach and a lot of questions about the roster. They have roughly $74 million in cap space, so some of those answers will come via free agency.

They could make a trade, but for the sake of a mock draft, the team will try to fill as many holes as possible with their nine draft picks. The team finished 4-13 and had the worst scoring defense in the NFL last season. The 19.4 points per game that the offense averaged, was good for 25th in the league. The Commanders gave up the most yards in the NFL last year on defense, and they had the 7th fewest takeaways of any team. Curtis Samuel, Kendall Fuller, Antonio Gibson, and Kamren Curl are all slated to hit the market this offseason. This mock draft will not feature any trades, up or down.

The commanders will draft where scheduled to on Pro Football Focus (2, 36, 40, 67, 100, 102, 141, 181, 223). After Caleb Williams goes with the first pick, the Commanders have a decision to make on whether or not they want to choose Drake Maye or Jayden Daniels. Maye has a higher floor and is a more complete passer right now, but Daniels has the higher ceiling, loads of talent, and the potential to be a generational player. He was the Heisman winner this past season. Daniels stands 6-4 and weighs 210 pounds. For as much as he runs, one would like to see him put on an additional 15 pounds or so of muscle.

He will likely run the forty between 4.40 and 4.50 seconds. On tape, he looks faster than that. He has an elite NFL arm and is exceptional at passing the deep ball. As the NFL Draft approaches, the Washington Commanders find themselves at a pivotal moment for rebuilding. They have a selection of draft picks that have the potential to dramatically alter the future course of the franchise. Now is the moment to forge ahead.

Through this 7-round mock draft, we will delve into the prospective players who may soon wear the Commanders' burgundy and gold to rejuvenate the spirits of their dedicated fan base. Following a Week 13 defeat to the Miami Dolphins, the Commanders failed to surpass or even equal their previous season’s 8–8–1 record. This marked their seventh consecutive season without a winning record. They were also knocked out of playoff contention for the third year in a row after a Week 15 loss to the Los Angeles Rams. Despite an encouraging start with a 2–0 record, the team's performance rapidly deteriorated. They conceded the most points of any team that year and recorded the league’s worst point differential at -189.

Additionally, their offense was ranked ninth worst in the NFL. The combination of these issues led the team to a dismal 2–13 finish for the remainder of the season. This included being swept in their division for the first time since 2019 and ending the year on an eight-game losing streak. Following the conclusion of the season, Commanders managing partner Josh Harris officially announced the team's separation from head coach Ron Rivera. The Commanders have been notably active in free agency, though without making major financial commitments to any single player. The goal appears to be to assemble a competent team around their new quarterback.

That's likely to be either Jayden Daniels or Drake Maye. Washington fans hope to achieve success with either QB in their careers. An integral part of this strategy includes securing a long-term solution at left tackle. Moreover, the Commanders are tackling the overhaul of a defense that was the most scored upon in the NFL last season. After trading away premier edge rushers Chase Young and Montez Sweat, the team has added several rotational players. However, it’s unlikely any of them are expected to fill the void left by those departures.

This offseason has been marked by huge changes for the Washington Commanders. Starting at the very top, Dan Quinn is the team's new head coach and he's cleaning house in the roster. The Commanders are a team with many needs starting with a quarterback. Sitting at the No. 2 overall pick, Washington should have their choice of three top signal callers.
