The new list puts the College in a tie for the nation’s top public program. Industrial, biomedical, and environmental engineering are each No. 1 in their disciplines. The Georgia Tech College of Engineering reclaimed the No. 3 position among the nation’s undergraduate engineering programs in the latest rankings from U.S. News & World Report.

The College moved up one spot on the 2026 Best Colleges list released Sept. 23. The ranking puts the program at No. 1 among public universities (tied with the University of California, Berkeley). The new list marks the second time in three years the College’s overall programs have ranked third, its best-ever position on the annual list. It’s also the first time three specific engineering disciplines ranked first in a single year:

The undergraduate engineering program rankings were based solely on peer assessment surveys. To appear on an undergraduate engineering survey, a school must have an undergraduate engineering program accredited by ABET. These programs are split into two groups: schools whose highest engineering degree offered is a doctorate and schools whose highest engineering degree offered is a bachelor's or master's. UC Berkeley Engineering holds onto the No. 3 spot in U.S. News and World Report’s annual rankings of undergraduate engineering programs. The college also remains the top public program, tying with Georgia Institute of Technology, also a public university. The majority of departmental programs continue to place in the top 3.

Both civil engineering and electrical engineering shot up to No. 1, up from second place last year. Mechanical engineering moved up to No. 2, while computer engineering leaped up two spots to No. 3. Additionally, industrial engineering moved up to No.

4. U.S. News includes rankings for both computer engineering and computer science. Both are housed in the Department of Electrical Engineering and Computer Sciences, which is shared with the College of Computing, Data Science, and Society. Computer engineering lands at No. 3, while computer science stands firmly at No.

U.S. News & World Report will release its graduate program rankings next spring. Berkeley News posted UC Berkeley’s rankings updates today. The College of Computing, Data Science, and Society also shared their rankings. One of the most popular career paths for students to follow these days is engineering, in part for the lucrative earnings they can expect. Thus, many local students seek admission to colleges known for strong programs in a multitude of engineering specialties.

While some colleges allow students to simply apply as engineering majors, others want them to specify their preferred niche: aeronautical, biological/agricultural, biomedical, chemical, civil, computer, electrical, environmental, industrial/ manufacturing, materials, mechanical, or petroleum. The top overall engineering schools, according to U.S. News & World Report’s Best Colleges guide, are MIT, Stanford University, University of California - Berkeley, Georgia Institute of Technology, California Institute of Technology, University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign (UIUC), University of Michigan, Carnegie Mellon... Other schools, still in the Top 20 but a bit easier to gain admission to, include Virginia Tech, University of Maryland, Ohio State University, and Penn State University. Students who know the specific area of engineering they favor can easily identify the strongest programs. For example, according to the Best Colleges guide, University of Delaware ranks No.

4 in the country for chemical engineering. This is due, in part, because Delaware is the headquarters of DuPont which employs 24,000 people and is popular with chemical engineers. The University of Delaware has an overall acceptance rate of 65%, typically making it a target school for most strong students.
