Mamdani, a member of the New York State Assembly for the Astoria district of Queens, beat out former Democratic Gov.

Andrew Cuomo — who ran as an independent after losing the Democratic primary — and Republican Curtis Sliwa. The race was called for Mamdani by the Associated Press around an hour after polls closed on Tuesday night.
