Uploaded by TV Archive on December 26, 2025 Less than a day after his historic win, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani joined “Mornings On 1” to reflect on his campaign, outline his priorities and address the challenges ahead as he prepares to take office... Speaking about election night, Mamdani described how it felt to see the results roll in. “It was a moment of anticipation, also a moment of anxiety, of waiting until we could actually get a glimpse of what the election would look like,” he said.
“But it was a joy to be sitting there with my wife and with close members of my team as we started to take in what more than a year of work has looked... Looking ahead, Mamdani said his team is focused on preparing to govern effectively from day one. “We have 57 days, and those are 57 days to start to do the work of preparing for January 1st, to hit the ground running,” he said. “Because New Yorkers deserve a City Hall that is not only dedicated, but is also going to deliver on actually addressing the cost-of-living crisis.” Updated on: November 5, 2025 / 6:53 AM EST / CBS New York Democrat Zohran Mamdani addressed his supporters Tuesday night after he was projected the winner of the 2025 New York City mayoral election.
CBS News made the projection just after 9:30 p.m. with about 60% of the vote counted. With 91% of the vote counted as of 12:25 a.m. Wednesday, Mamdani had 50.4% of the vote, followed by former Gov. Andrew Cuomo at 41.6%. Mamdani's campaign expected more than 2,000 people to gather for its Election Night watch party in Brooklyn.
New York Attorney General Letitia James and New York City Public Advocate Jumaane Williams were among those in the crowd. Mamdani's supporters could be heard cheering as news of his projected win broke. Mamdani opened his speech with a quote by American socialist Eugene Debs. Mayor-elect centered affordability and the working people of the city in his speech while emphasizing: ‘Hope is alive’ The sun may have set over our city this evening, but as Eugene Debs once said: “I can see the dawn of a better day for humanity.” For as long as we can remember, the working people of New York have been told by the wealthy and the well-connected that power does not belong in their hands.
Fingers bruised from lifting boxes on the warehouse floor, palms calloused from delivery bike handlebars, knuckles scarred with kitchen burns: these are not hands that have been allowed to hold power. And yet, over the last 12 months, you have dared to reach for something greater. Tonight, against all odds, we have grasped it. The future is in our hands. My friends, we have toppled a political dynasty. A close annotation of the references, applause lines and barbs in Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani’s address to his supporters.
In his victory speech on Tuesday night, Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani presented a new geography for New York City, one anchored not by Wall Street and City Hall but by outer-borough enclaves like Kensington in... He hailed a new political power base, comprising Senegalese cab drivers, Ethiopian aunties, Yemeni bodega owners and Uzbek nurses. And he made little outreach to the more than 850,000 people who voted for former Gov. Andrew M. Cuomo, saying, “Let tonight be the final time I utter his name.” Though Mr.
Mamdani’s campaign is rightly celebrated for its deft use of social media, he also outworked his competitors in old-school stumping, delivering 150 speeches between Primary Day and the general election. Julian Gerson, who wrote the victory speech with heavy input from the candidate, remembered Mr. Mamdani coming off a sunrise campaign march across the Brooklyn Bridge last Monday and sitting down to 90 minutes of revisions — adding references to neighborhoods he had visited and anecdotes of people he... On Election Night, he did not hesitate to code-switch into Arabic, always in moments of affection. And when the speech was over, after a call-and-response with the audience, he walked offstage to “Dhoom Machale,” a Bollywood banger. Eugene V.
Debs (1855-1926), a labor leader and five-time Socialist Party presidential candidate, spoke these words in 1918 while awaiting sentencing after being convicted under the Espionage Act of interfering with the World War I draft. He ran for president from prison in 1920, as Convict No. 9653, and received nearly one million votes. Both Andrew Cuomo and Curtis Sliwa conceded on Tuesday night. "The future is in our hands, my friends, we have toppled a political dynasty," New York City Mayor-elect Zohran Mamdani said to a roaring crowd in Brooklyn. The mayoral race that skyrocketed to national attention came to a stunning conclusion on Tuesday; 34-year-old democratic socialist Mamdani is projected to be the next mayor of New York City, according to ABC News'...
Mamdani's victory will make him the city's first Muslim and South Asian mayor. His identity became a topic of scrutiny throughout the course of the campaign, with Mamdani accusing Independent candidate former Gov. Andrew Cuomo, as well as Vice President JD Vance, of engaging in Islamophobic attacks. Trump has called Mamdani a "communist lunatic" and, before the election Tuesday, threatened to withhold federal funding to New York City if Mamdani were to win. Zohran Mamdani spoke to his supporters, New York City, and the world last night: “We have won because New Yorkers have stood up for a city they can afford. A city where they can do more than just struggle.” We publish his speech in full here.

In the words of Nelson Mandela: “It always seems impossible until it is done.” My friends, we have done it. I will be your Democratic nominee for the mayor of New York City. An hour ago, I spoke with Andrew Cuomo about the need to bring this city together, as he called me to concede the race. And I want to thank Brad Lander. Together we have shown the power of the politics of the future. One of partnership and of sincerity.
