In 1952, during the nationwide re-organization of colleges and departments, Department of Hydraulic Engineering was founded based on the corresponding section, with two programs available, namely river & waterpower station structure and hydraulic dynamical... Meanwhile, Department of Civil Engineering had five programs, namely industrial and civil structure, construction, water supply and sewerage, heating & ventilating discipline, building materials. In 1960s, Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Architecture were merged as Department of Civil Engineering and Architecture, which was renamed as Department of Architectural Engineering in 1970. In 1980, it was again separated into Department Architecture and Department of Civil and Environmental Engineering. In 1984, after the separation of water supply and sewerage part, Department of Civil Engineering was restored. In 1986, construction management was added as a new program in Department of Civil Engineering.

In 2000, School of Civil Engineering was founded by combining Department of Civil Engineering and Department of Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering. Meanwhile, based on the resources of "engineering management" in the two departments, Department of Construction Management was founded. Establishment of School of Civil Engineering, with each of its three departments respectively represents a first-level discipline, made a new integrated shape academically. For undergraduate education, a common training plat called "technology plus management" was established and adopted through all the three departments. For scientific research, importance has been attached to fundamental research and engineering applications, with tremendous efforts made to meet the national demand and to promote discipline development. Construction Management seeks to cultivate students’ knowledge of natural science and engineering, as well as strong management skills.

The undergraduate program in Construction Management also equips students with a high level of proficiency in English and computer skills. Students gain practical experience in construction, such as project evaluator, consultant, project manager, architect, and engineer and project manager. After graduation, they are prepared to begin careers in construction and real estate project management, such as project planning, evaluation, design, construction, and operation and maintenance. Students who have completed the four years of undergraduate training program will be awarded a Bachelor of Engineering. A large number of high-level scientific research work entrusted by the National Natural Science Foundation of China, the Ministry of Science and Technology, the Ministry of Construction and other ministries, local governments and institutions,...

We participated in a large number of engineering research and consulting projects including the Yangtze River Three Gorges Project and the 2008 Beijing Olympic venues. In addition, the Department of Construction Management is located in the international high-level education, training, research, and consulting Institute, and has established stable and cooperative relations with international organizations such as the Royal Institute... Outstanding undergraduate students can be recommended to study for Masters or PhD degrees directly without needing to take the entrance examination. Graduates are welcomed by employers. Graduates embark on careers in real estate development, engineering management and consulting, finance and investment, foreign projects and other enterprises, and institutions for design, teaching, research and public management. In the recent years, approximately 90 students per year are admitted to the undergraduate program in Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering. As part of the ‘undergraduate-master’ approach to study, the undergraduate course of study includes professional courses such as Natural Science, Engineering Science, Humanities, Social Science, Water Resources Engineering, Water Conservancy and Hydropower Engineering, Foundation... With regards t student education, in addition to the long-employed Instructor-Tutor model, the undergraduate supervisor mode has been recently introduced. A full scholarship system exists in the Department of Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering. In addition to university-level scholarships, there are several department scholarships such as the Guangdou Zhang scholarship, the Zhaoyu Wu scholarship, the Yalong River hydropower scholarship, and the Yunnan Huigu scholarship.

More than 2/3 of students receive one or more scholarships each year. In 2016, the major of ‘Hydraulic and Hydropower Engineering’ was renamed to the major of ‘Hydraulic Science and Engineering’. Established in 1926, the Department of Civil Engineering is one of the most time-honored departments within Tsinghua University. As early as 1916, “Tsinghua Xuexiao” (Tsinghua College, the predecessor of Tsinghua University) began to enroll students majoring in civil engineering and sent them to U.S. universities for further study. Currently, the department owns multi-level research platforms: laboratory of physics and mechanics of civil engineering materials, laboratory of structural engineering, and virtual laboratory of smart cities.
