Newspaper indexes list articles classified by subjects, names, personal notices, advertising, illustration, or other items found in a newspaper. If you are looking for coverage of a particular person or event, you can use indexes to possibly find citations that will lead you to specific issues and page numbers for articles. Be aware that for newspapers, there are no comprehensive retrospective indexes covering multiple titles over long time periods, and many newspapers lack any of indexing at all. There are numerous local digitization projects. Even where payment is required for full text, searching is often free. Online Newspapers by Country and English International Newspapers list current English-language newspapers.

Where no archives are provided on the newspaper website, often the Internet Archive Wayback Machine has issues sometimes back to 2000. Especially for the earlier years, available issues may be scattered. and sometimes the websites are not fully functional. Try searching for your title in the Digital Public Library of America (DPLA). Or search city/town name + newspapers. PastPages offers front pages from news sites.

Pages are archived hourly and go back to May 2012. Newspaper Research Links offers state/province lists of digitized newspaper projects Bibliographies are essentially lists of works, in this case newspapers. Many of the bibliographies of historical newspapers are arranged by state and inform the reader not only which newspapers were published where and when but also where copies of those newspapers may be located... Some of the bibliographies included in this list were published many years ago, and thus have outdated holdings information; nevertheless they can serve as a source of helpful leads for those involved in serious... Indexes provide information about the contents of newspapers and are extremely useful for finding specific newspaper issues that cover a given topic or event.

The print indexes included here are the precursors of the modern, searchable database such as those provided by ProQuest's Historical Newspapers series. The majority of print indexes at the University of Maryland's McKeldin Library are located on the first floor in the Reference Section. Most of the indexes are no longer actively accessioned and provide coverage of only a small collection of years. However, the indexes for several major newspapers, such as the Washington Post and New York Times are still available up to the present day. However, indexes have been compiled for some major papers, including the New York Times.
