The resources, available in printed form, on microfilm, and as digitized images comprise one of the larger collections in the library. In addition to newspapers, this guide also includes links to several other news-related subjects. It is not intended as a guide to pursuing newspaper research. There is no advice on evaluating sources, no hints on preparing citations for newspaper articles, no tips on tracking down dates or subjects. Newspaper directories are typically annuals. They note what newspapers were published each year, with circulation figures, dimensions, frequency, and intended audience. Newspaper Directories were created for prospective advertisers to learn about media markets. They may give information about publication's circulation area such as population or industries. Frequently they include tables of the Sunday press, weekly press, foreign language press, religious press, and trade papers. They often give the name of the publisher, editor, and/or advertising manager.

Newspaper directories are one of the first places to look to discover which titles were published in a given year or for a geographical area. Occasionally, these volumes document the existence of newspapers that have not been preserved, but they may just as well lead you to look for titles that you did not know existed. Historical newspapers provide a wealth of information for family history research. All are available full text to BPL cardholders, for use at home, work, or school. Below are a few newspaper databases that are useful in genealogy research. If you are looking for coverage of a particular person or event, you can use indexes to possibly find citations that will lead you to specific issues and page numbers for articles. Be aware that for newspapers, there are no comprehensive retrospective indexes covering multiple titles over long time periods, and many newspapers lack any of indexing at all.
