Red Sox Dh David Ortiz Gets Walk Off Standing Ovation In Final All
SAN DIEGO -- Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz ended his All-Star Game career with quite a walk off. The popular Big Papi was embraced outside the dugout by nearly every member of the American League roster Tuesday night when he was replaced by a pinch runner and strolled back to the bench. Miguel Cabrera playfully tousled Ortiz's hair. As Ortiz made his way through the scrum of players, he wrapped his Red Sox teammate Jackie Bradley Jr. in a bear hug and lifted him off the ground. Ortiz called the embraces "something I'll never forget.
... You see all your boys." Catcher Buster Posey of the San Francisco Giants clapped his bare hand against his mitt as Ortiz left the field. David Ortiz's 10th and final All-Star appearance ended in anticlimactic fashion Tuesday in San Diego, when the Boston Red Sox legend exited quietly to a standing ovation after drawing a walk in the third... Prior to the game, there was considerable fanfare over whether Jose Fernandez would groove a pitch down the middle so Ortiz could hit a homer in his All-Star finale. Alas, Fernandez and Big Papi exchanged laughs during the third-inning showdown, but all Ortiz got to show for it was a seven-pitch walk.

NOTE: The Sox resume regular season play Friday night against the Yankees. NEW YORK (AP) — Playing in the Bronx one last time, Boston Red Sox star David Ortiz was given a 30-second standing ovation at Yankee Stadium instead of the usual boos. There were many fans in Red Sox colors in Thursday night’s crowd, which chanted his nickname “Pa-pi! Pa-pi!” Only a smattering of booing could be heard. Ortiz struck out in the second inning against CC Sabathia, dropping to 0 for 10 in the three-game series and hitless in his last 14 at-bats against the Yankees. Ortiz walked in the fourth and was replaced by pinch runner Brock Holt, then received another ovation as he jogged to the Red Sox dugout.
Ortiz pointed to the Yankees dugout in thanks as he headed to the third base side. Hitting .315 with 37 homers and 124 RBIs, the 40-year-old designated hitter is having among the greatest final seasons in big league history. During a pregame ceremony that lasted about 5 minutes, Ortiz was presented an oil painting of himself and a leather-bound book with handwritten letters from current and former Yankees. The Red Sox had honored a pair of Yankees greats before their Fenway Park finales, Mariano Rivera in 2013 and Derek Jeter the following year. One of the biggest storylines early in the season was the complete disconnect between Rafael Devers and the Red Sox. The situation was messy from start to finish, largely because Devers felt misled by the organization.
“Devers, according to a person familiar with his thinking, felt 'lied to and betrayed' by the Red Sox. Cora, long one of Devers' chief supporters and advocates, supported his expulsion. Craig Breslow, the Red Sox's chief baseball officer whom Devers publicly badmouthed amid the hostility, played hatchet man,” MLB’s Jeff Passan wrote. As a result, Devers was traded to the San Francisco Giants. “The Red Sox had just pulled off a three-game sweep of the rival Yankees for their seventh win in the last eight games and were getting ready for a Sunday night West Coast trip... Star slugger Rafael Devers, the lone remaining player from the team’s most recent World Series title squad of 2018, was dealt to the Giants for righty Jordan Hicks, lefty Kyle Harrison and a pair...
4 prospect at the time of the deal) and righty Jose Bello,” MLB.com’s Ian Browne wrote. During an interview on the ITM Podcast, David Ortiz shared why Devers’ time in Boston came to an end.
