David Ortiz Exits All Star Game To Standing Ovation Youtube
SAN DIEGO -- Red Sox warrior-poet David Ortiz was the American League's starting DH in the All-Star Game on Tuesday night at Petco Park (AL 4, NL 2). It was also his final All-Star appearance, as Big Papi long ago announced that the 2016 season would be his last. In his 10th and final Midsummer Classic, he grounded out in the first and then worked a seven-pitch walk off Jose Fernandez in the third (contrary to advance speculation, Fernandez didn't serve one up... After that, AL manager Ned Yost listed Ortiz for pinch-runner Edwin Encarnacion so that the former could get a proper All-Star send-off ... Ortiz entered Tuesday night with a career All-Star batting line of .313/.389/.500 in 18 plate appearances. Now Ortiz will get back to helming the Red Sox as they aim to get back to the postseason.
He'll enter the second half with a robust line of .332/.426/.682 with 22 homers and a majors-leading 34 doubles. At this rate, he'll wind up with perhaps the greatest final season in baseball history. Provided he actually retires, of course ... Looking forward to seeing David Ortiz in next year's All-Star Game. He didn't hit a home run in his final All-Star Game like Cal Ripken Jr. He didn't have the game or the sendoff that Derek Jeter did.
In fact, David Ortiz didn't even record a hit in his final All-Star appearance. Still, that didn't stop him from getting a well-deserved sendoff. .@davidortiz's 10th and final #ASG is in the books. He got a proper send-off on FOX: https://t.co/DGACLMfISU pic.twitter.com/gk3grfiqqb Ortiz walked in his second and final plate appearance. That gave American League manager Ned Yost the opportunity to pull him from the game. Yost pitch ran for Ortiz, which allowed the slugger to come out of the game to a huge ovation from the fans and players in attendance.
The AL players greeted him on the field with hugs and handshakes. There was no signature hit -- he went 0-for-1 with the walk -- and no red carpet, but hugs and handshakes after a walk is about as David Ortiz as a sendoff gets.
