PRSA Puget Sound annually accepts applications for the Sally Heet Memorial Scholarship and the Horace and Susie Revels Cayton Scholarship. Each scholarship is worth up to $4,000 and honors outstanding college students pursuing a career in PR. Applications for the 2026 scholarships will open in February 2026. The Sally Heet Memorial Scholarship was established in 1986 in memory of a former member and good friend of PRSA Puget Sound.
Sally Heet was a longtime Seattle-area practitioner and graduate of the University of Washington School of Communications. At the time of her death on April 16, 1986, she was working in Washington, D.C., as press secretary to Senator Dan Evans. Heet was one of the most influential press secretaries on Capitol Hill, self-possessed, confident, professional. She was the victim of a senseless act of violence at her residence in D.C. This annual award is presented to an outstanding public relations student from a college or university in Washington state. The Horace and Susie Revels Cayton Scholarship was established in 1992 in memory of Horace and Susie Revels Cayton.
At the beginning of the 20th century, the Caytons were editors of a popular political newspaper, The Seattle Republican. In later life, after publishing Cayton’s Weekly, the couple turned their publishing expertise into a public relations business and were likely Seattle’s first Black public relations practitioners. This scholarship aims to increase access to the profession for students who have faced systemic obstacles in pursuing their education. Applicants must attend school in Washington State and demonstrate a desire to practice public relations. Note: Scholarship selection shall be made without regard to race, color, religion, sex, sexual orientation, gender identity, age, national origin, disability, veteran status, or any other category protected by applicable law. Conversely, an applicant will not be selected solely based on one or more of the aforementioned protected categories.
