Central to effective professional learning for SEL is the need to promote adult SEL skills and competencies. All staff members need initial and ongoing professional learning and support to implement evidence-based SEL practices and programs. CASEL recommends that states provide professional learning leadership and resources through statewide professional learning networks, linking districts with professional learning resources, and creating professional learning communities on key SEL topics. It identifies five core competencies: self-awareness, self-management, social awareness, relationship skills, and responsible decision-making. This framework provides educators with a structure to foster students' emotional intelligence, enhance academic performance, and cultivate positive school climates. Social-Emotional Learning (SEL): A process through which individuals learn to recognize and manage emotions, set goals, show empathy for others, establish positive relationships, and make responsible decisions. Emotional Intelligence: The ability to understand and manage one's own emotions and the emotions of others, which is essential for effective communication and relationship-building. A set of strategies designed to build relationships and community while addressing behavior through collaborative processes that involve all stakeholders. Social Emotional Learning (SEL) is a process through which individuals build awareness and skills in managing emotions, setting goals, establishing relationships, and making responsible decisions that support success in school and in life.
The Washington SEL Framework was developed by the SEL Advisory Committee under direction of SB 5082, to promote and expand social emotional learning across Washington state. Guiding principles, the essential elements are key implementation practices that lead to successful SEL implementation and sustainability. These components are critical to ensuring that SEL efforts in schools stay true to Washington State’s commitment. Every other school year, school districts must use one of the professional learning days funded under RCW 28A.415.445 to train staff on SEL or SEL-related topics. This menu of professional learning options and resources was co-developed with over 30 district leaders, educators, instructional professionals, coaches, and content experts.
