patriots mock draft roundup 4 0 could travis hunter fall to new

April 2, 2025 / 8:48 AM EDT / CBS Boston The 2025 NFL Draft is now just weeks away, though we really don't have much clarity on how things will go at the top the draft board. The uncertainty with the first three picks has made it hard to figure out who the New England Patriots will land with the fourth overall selection. "You tell me who goes 1-2-3 and I'll tell you who goes four," Patriots head coach Mike Vrabel joked with reporters at the AFC Coaches breakfast at the NFL annual meetings in West Palm... If two of the Tennessee Titans, Cleveland Browns, and/or New York Giants draft quarterbacks over the first three picks, the Patriots will have a chance to draft either Penn State star edge rusher Abdul... If only one quarterback goes in the top three, the Patriots won't have that opportunity, but they should have their pick of a few talented offensive linemen.

However, each of those linemen bring some question marks at the next level. It's all made for an interesting Mock Draft season, as mockers try to figure out how the top of the draft board will shake out on April 24. In the latest round of mocks, many draft experts see the Patriots snagging one of the most fascinating players in NFL Draft history. Patriots insider Phil Perry is back with his latest mock draft where the Patriots select Travis Hunter with fourth overall pick. The New England Patriots have been one of the busiest teams in NFL free agency so far. They have spent over $300 million in contracts so far, with the latest being a three-year, $69 million deal for free agent wide receiver Stefon Diggs earlier this week.

Despite the Diggs addition, it still makes a lot of sense for the Patriots to consider taking Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, assuming he's on the board when New England is on the clock... 4 overall pick. The reigning Heisman Trophy winner has drawn comparisons to New York Jets star Garrett Wilson as a wideout. But a case could be made that Hunter's best position is cornerback. Even though wide receiver and cornerback aren't the Patriots' No. 1 needs right now, passing on Hunter's elite and unique skill set could be a big mistake.

The New England Patriots may have a very difficult draft decision on their hands this spring. Every Patriots fan is painfully aware that their team could have had the number-one pick in this draft had they simply lost their final regular-season game against the Buffalo Bills. Instead, rookie quarterback Joe Milton balled out, and New England dropped to number four. Because the Patriots don't need a quarterback, there are probably three prospects they'll be considering if they stay at the fourth pick: Penn State edge-rusher Abdul Carter, Colorado wide receiver/cornerback Travis Hunter, and LSU... Assuming Carter, the consensus number-one prospect in the draft, doesn't fall to the Patriots, they'll be forced to either take a gamble on Hunter's two-way experiment at the NFL level or go the "safe"...

On Monday, Kyle Crabbs of The 33rd Team predicted that New England would gamble on upside. In his 2025 mock draft, Crabbs paired Hunter with the Patriots at the number-four selection. The New England Patriots badly need a long-term No. 1 wide receiver to pair with young franchise quarterback Drake Maye. That is one area that they are expected to target aggressively during the upcoming NFL offseason. With that in mind, the Patriots are expected to have a very high pick in the 2025 NFL Draft.

Right now, they are projected to have the No. 3 pick if the season ended today. Of course, there is one player at the top of the draft that every fan in New England would love to see the franchise get. That player is none other than Colorado Buffaloes superstar Travis Hunter. If the Patriots do end up getting the No. 3 overall pick, they could end up having a shot at Hunter.

At the top of the draft, there is a chance that two quarterbacks would be taken back to back. In that scenario, New England would have the chance to select Hunter. The 2025 NFL Draft is approaching, and teams are starting to decide which positions to target and which players to select. Front offices need to hit on their picks, especially if they have a high draft selection. The quarterback position is the most crucial in the NFL, but this isn’t the best year to choose one. Cam Ward and Shedeur Sanders are the top two quarterbacks in the draft.

The four players expected to go in the top four are QB Cam Ward, DL Abdul Carter, QB Shedeur Sanders, and WR/CB Travis Hunter. Tennessee holds the number one overall pick and desperately needs a quarterback. The Titans are expected to select Cam Ward, who is widely regarded as the best QB in the draft and the number one overall pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. However, once Ward is picked first, it’s uncertain who might go next among Carter, Sanders, and Hunter. The New England Patriots have a lot of work to do this offseason, as they need to make upgrades all over their roster after their miserable 2024 campaign. One avenue that they can utilize is the upcoming 2025 NFL draft, where they are armed with the No.

4 overall pick, giving them a lot of different options they could end up pursuing. The Pats have needs all over their roster. They desperately need to infuse their offense with talent, whether it be on the offensive line, or in the playmaker positions to give quarterback Drake Maye more options to work with. Their defense could also use some help, particularly in the front seven. Could New England end up drafting a player in Travis Hunter who could fill in on both sides of the ball? That's what this ESPN mock draft believes.

“Hunter is my top player in this class and a rare prospect, even beyond his two-way ability. His spatial awareness, quickness and ball skills are unique no matter where he plays. I'd put Hunter full time at corner and sprinkle in 20-25 plays a game at receiver. The Patriots need to stack talent, and Hunter gives them an A+ start in that quest,” Jordan Reid of ESPN wrote in his latest mock draft. Hunter stood out by playing on both offense and defense during his time in college with the Colorado Buffaloes. Not only did he play on both sides, but he excelled as both a wide receiver and a cornerback.

On offense, Hunter hauled in 96 receptions for 1,258 yards and 15 touchdowns. Defensively, Hunter had 36 tackles, four interceptions, 11 passes defended, and a fumble forced. New England could fill a pair of holes by adding one player, but there's no guarantee he will play both sides of the ball in the NFL, despite his desire to do so. The Patriots could end up locking in on other top prospects, like defensive lineman Abdul Carter or offensive lineman Will Campbell, or they could ultimately end up trading down from this pick too. If they landed Hunter, though, it's safe to say that fans would be quite fired up.
