Patriots Drake Maye Downplays Comparison To Mvp Quarterback
Patriots' Drake Maye Downplays Comparison to MVP Quarterback originally appeared on Athlon Sports. New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye had an up-and-down rookie season but showed promise down the stretch. However, Maye did not have a lot of help around him and was constantly under pressure in 2024. The Patriots' rookie finished with a 3-9 record, throwing for 2,276 yards and 15 touchdowns with 10 interceptions. However, those numbers are similar to the rookie-season numbers of another former top quarterback pick in the AFC. Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen finished his rookie season with a 5-6 record, throwing 2,074 yards and 10 touchdowns with 12 interceptions.
After seven years in the NFL, Allen is a three-time Pro-Bowler and MVP winner. Earlier this offseason, Allen had high praise for the Maye, calling him "super talented," and one of his "favorite young quarterbacks in the league." Maye has a long way to go, but his first... Ever since Drake Maye became the starting quarterback at North Carolina, he has drawn comparisons to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. Those comparisons didn’t stop in college. When Maye was selected No. 3 overall by the New England Patriots in the 2024 NFL Draft, they only grew louder.
As he enters his second year in the league, Maye is finally speaking out about the Allen comparisons. Being compared to Josh Allen is never a bad thing, especially when you’re a young up-and-coming quarterback in the NFL like Drake Maye. Allen has been a superstar since he entered the league in 2018, throwing for 26,434 yards and 195 touchdowns in seven seasons, and winning the NFL MVP in 2024. While it’s something Maye can take pride in, he made it clear on the “Bussin’ with the Boys” podcast that he knows he hasn’t earned those comparisons yet. An NFL coach sees similarities between Drake Maye and a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Maye is in his second NFL season and has taken a massive step this season.
The sophomore quarterback threw for 222 touchdowns and two touchdowns in a 31-13 road win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. With the Patriots down 10-3, Maye went on a clinical drive, including a 19-yard run and a beautiful 22-yard completion to Mack Hollins, which was part of a 93-yard touchdown drive. Following the game, an anonymous NFL coach spoke to The Athletic’s Mike Sando and compared Maye’s throws to Aaron Rodgers. “That explosive (pass) to Hollins was (Aaron) Rodgers-like,” the coach said, in a piece published on Monday. The New England Patriots moved to 9-2 on the season, after another impressive win against division rivals, the New York Jets, 27-14. Drake Maye once again showed his immense capability from the pocket, completing 25/34 passes for 281 yards and 1 passing touchdown.
And in the wake of yet another dominating performance, calls have started — at least in New England — for him to be placed front and center of the regular season MVP conversation. Yet, some feel less convinced that the second year quarterback should be on the receiving end of such lavish praise. Speaking on ESPN's Get Up the day after the game, analyst and former All-Pro linebacker, Bart Scott, explained why he does not believe the former University of North Carolina product should be a key... Bart Scott on Drake Maye being MVP 🎥: @GetUpESPN “I saw a quarterback that has a good coordinator that has designed good plays for him. FOXBOROUGH — Drake Maye was smiling as he jogged back into the huddle. Not because he’d just ripped off a 28-yard scramble. And certainly not because a section of fans at Gillette Stadium had begun chanting: Maye was actually laughing as his Patriots teammates needled him for his awkward looking slide that ended the run at the Cleveland 39-yard line. On the next play, Maye left nothing to needle. He stepped into a perfect throw down the left side toward the end zone where Kayshon Boutte ran under it.
In two plays that went 67 yards, Maye showed his running and throwing ability. His instincts and athleticism. The chants started again. Longer and louder. Fans across sports have been overusing that chant to pump the tires of the local stars for decades. But this was neither homerism run amok nor premature adulation.
After roughly half a decade's absence from real Super Bowl contention, there's no need to deny reality anymore. The 8-2 New England Patriots are back. Doubt Mike Vrabel's bunch at your own risk because they are a wagon. The biggest reason the Patriots are once again a superpower is the play of second-year quarterback Drake Maye. The former No. 3 overall draft pick has blossomed into a veritable superstar this season.
At the time of this writing, Maye is on pace for over 4,300 yards passing, 32 touchdown passes, and just nine interceptions. Oh, and he's also completing nearly 72 percent of his passes with a robust 8.9 yards per pass attempt while sitting No. 2 overall amongst all quarterbacks in composite Expected Points Added (EPA) and Completion Percentage Over Expected (CPOE). If I didn't know any better, that sounds like an NFL MVP-caliber season for Maye. Well, that's because it is. The question now is whether Maye really does have a legit shot of winning MVP in just his second season.
Outside of Maye's stellar play, the best way to assess this is to see his current competition. Let's take a quick look at the tale of the tape, at the time of publishing:
