Nfl Coach Compares Patriots Qb Drake Maye To 4 Time Nfl Mvp Nesn
An NFL coach sees similarities between Drake Maye and a future Hall of Fame quarterback. Maye is in his second NFL season and has taken a massive step this season. The sophomore quarterback threw for 222 touchdowns and two touchdowns in a 31-13 road win over the Tennessee Titans on Sunday. With the Patriots down 10-3, Maye went on a clinical drive, including a 19-yard run and a beautiful 22-yard completion to Mack Hollins, which was part of a 93-yard touchdown drive. Following the game, an anonymous NFL coach spoke to The Athletic’s Mike Sando and compared Maye’s throws to Aaron Rodgers. “That explosive (pass) to Hollins was (Aaron) Rodgers-like,” the coach said, in a piece published on Monday.
The hype train for New England Patriots quarterback Drake Maye has run completely off the tracks, and for good reason. Maye has arguably been the NFL’s best quarterback through seven weeks, and while it’s still hard to say how good New England can be this season, Maye’s presence alone gives legitimate optimism for seasons... Maye set a Patriots record in an Oct. 19 win over the Tennessee Titans, completing 21 of 23 passes for a franchise-best 91.3% completion rate. In the process, he continued to show why vibes are as high as they’ve been since the Tom Brady era in New England, and insiders around the NFL are taking notice, too. The Athletic’s Mike Sando spoke to one NFL coach who labeled one of Maye’s throws “(Aaron) Rodgers-like,” while others in the industry are ready to make declarative statements about his future.
“For the first time, football people view Maye as possibly being a guy,” another executive told Sando. “He has always looked the part because of his measurables, but the game had not slowed down enough for him to develop that stuff.” Drake Maye is having a sensational sophomore season as the New England Patriots' starting quarterback, exciting fans who finally have their worthy passing successor to Tom Brady. Turns out, Maye's breakout Year 2 in 2025 after being drafted No. 3 overall in 2024 is well ahead of what Brady was able to do as a young Patriots QB. Maye is also emerging as an MVP candidate with his team moving to 4-2, thanks in big part to his play in Sunday's solid 25-19 win at New Orleans.
With the UNC product's standout sophomore start, there have been some statistical comparisons getting thrown around with big names. MORE: Everything to know about Drake Maye's football family Here's looking at Maye's numbers so far in six games and why he's on a historic stretch for being only 23: FOXBOROUGH, Mass. - Drake Maye’s first memory of the deep ball wasn’t as a quarterback. It was as a receiver.
He’s the youngest of four brothers and anyone who has older siblings knows how the hierarchy works. "They wouldn't let me play quarterback," he said. Finally, when they gave him the ball, Drake connected on his first-ever long ball with his brother Luke, the fastest sibling, at their house in Huntersville, North Carolina. And so it began. By high school, Maye was the QB1 at Myers Park in Charlotte. His downfield throws would take the air out of the stadium.
"I just remember throwing deep balls and the crowd would gasp," Maye said. "Just hearing that gasp was pretty cool. … Hearing the crowd get into it, I think you always get excited." FOXBORO — The Drake Maye experience is … chaotic. In spurts, New England’s second-year quarterback looks deserving of the third overall pick. And in between those plays, he overextends to show why he’s earned that draft capital.
The attributes are legitimate and, when it comes to fruition, Maye draws comparisons to Buffalo's Josh Allen. But there’s no replicating Allen, or Patrick Mahomes or Lamar Jackson — Drake Maye must find his own way through the NFL after 15 starts. The Patriots are rolling as winners of seven straight games following another impressive road victory in Tampa Bay on Sunday. For all the talk about the easy schedule, QB Drake Maye just went through a three-week slate where he faced three top-15 pass defenses in EPA: the Browns (15th), Falcons (11th), and Bucs (6th). Offensively, at least, this wasn't an easy stretch. Maye came out of the mini-gauntlet with the following stat line: 63.1% completion rate, 270.3 pass YPG, 7-3 TD to INT ratio, +0.06 EPA per play.
And, of course, the most important stat is three wins — not too shabby. As for the Bucs game, my fear was that we might see one-and-run Maye with the Bucs pressure speeding up the second-year quarterback. Maye entered the game with the second-most sacks (34) and the third-highest sack rate (10.7%) among qualified quarterbacks. Given that Tampa's defense was top-10 in every meaningful pass-rush metric, it was valid to be concerned about Maye either taking sacks or not allowing plays to develop by hitting the eject button from... Instead, Maye keeps passing checkpoints with mostly sound decision-making of when to stay or leave the pocket, while throwing haymakers at an aggressive Bucs defense in the form of big plays. Despite being under pressure on 44.4% of his drop-backs, Maye was only sacked once, a 1-yard sack at that, while hitting four completions for 167 yards and a touchdown while under pressure — Maye...
The other half of the Patriots offensive letterhead that deserves his flowers is OC Josh McDaniels. McDaniels's willingness to stick with the run game even though it was looking bleak at times paid huge dividends in the second half. Even yours truly got impatient watching live as RB TreVeyon Henderson was stuffed on a toss, only for the rookie to explode for a 69-yard TD to essentially put this one away. That's why we're fans/scribes and McDaniels has the play-sheet on the sideline.
