You’re reading the calendar right: we’re only halfway through October, but the Best Books of the Year list season is upon us, starting with Barnes & Noble. They’ve named their picks for the best books of 2025 in 19 categories: Fiction, Gift Books, Mystery & Thriller Books, Biographies & Memoirs, Picture Books, Young Reader (Middle Grade) Books, Young Adult, Science Fiction... The categories reflect the source as a bookstore; it’s easy to see why Gift Books is one of the first categories listed. There are more nonfiction categories than we’re likely to see in other Best Books of the Year lists.
The odd category out is “eBook Series.” Perhaps the original intention was “Best eBooks” to match “Best Audiobooks,” but there isn’t the same consideration of format for eBooks—while an audiobook’s quality is heavily dependent... This “eBook Series” category lets Barnes & Noble show that you can buy ebooks from them, but it doesn’t make much sense from a reader perspective. Here is a selection of the Barnes & Noble picks for the best books of 2025: A cool book will fix you during the hottest days of summer, and our August Monthly Picks have you covered. Escape with a cat-and-mouse thriller, a monstrous werewolf tale, a coming-of-age novel about teenagers and art, a harrowing memoir about an accidental addiction, a sun-drenched summer horror story, and a suspenseful stand-alone about two... Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino Ghosts of Hiroshima by Charles Pellegrino is a harrowing and deeply human account of the atomic bombings, arriving just in time for the 80th anniversary of Hiroshima. Soon to be a major motion picture from director James Cameron, this powerful work of nonfiction blends forensic archaeology and over 200 survivor interviews to capture the unimaginable.
Through the eyes of those who lived it—including Tsutomu Yamaguchi, who survived both Hiroshima and Nagasaki—Pellegrino reveals the brutal aftermath of nuclear war in vivid, heartbreaking detail. The Book of the Month August 2025 selections are here! Decide which of these books you want to add to your subscription box. Book of the Month is my favorite subscription box. Every month, I choose between their curated book selections, and voila! A blue box arrives at my door carrying one (or two or three) new books for me to read. Each month, Book of the Month chooses between five to seven hardcover books you can choose from.
Rather listen to an audiobook? Book of the Month has those, too! Now you can opt for audiobooks as your monthly pick or add them on at any time during the month. Every month, I will highlight the books chosen and let you know my thoughts on the chosen titles. Even if you don’t have a Book of the Month subscription (yet), I think you’ll find value in looking at a curated list of new releases.
