They’ve named their picks for the best books of 2025 in 19 categories: Fiction, Gift Books, Mystery & Thriller Books, Biographies & Memoirs, Picture Books, Young Reader (Middle Grade) Books, Young Adult, Science Fiction... The categories reflect the source as a bookstore; it’s easy to see why Gift Books is one of the first categories listed. There are more nonfiction categories than we’re likely to see in other Best Books of the Year lists. The odd category out is “eBook Series.” Perhaps the original intention was “Best eBooks” to match “Best Audiobooks,” but there isn’t the same consideration of format for eBooks—while an audiobook’s quality is heavily dependent... This “eBook Series” category lets Barnes & Noble show that you can buy ebooks from them, but it doesn’t make much sense from a reader perspective. Getting a best books of 2025 in the middle of October wasn’t something I expected but here we are. Barnes & Noble has beat everyone with the first list of the best books of 2025. But many people including me feel like it is a bit too early. We still have two and a half months left which is a lot! Unfortunately for me and most readers, Barnes & Noble made over a dozen lists and trying to write all the books here is not something I will be doing. Instead, I will be sharing some of the books from the main lists and might share the other lists in the coming days separately.

You can see the list below! I will give Barnes & Noble some credit for releasing the first list of the best books of 2025. But it feels like they included most books and it doesn’t feel like they made any difficult picks. From this list, I can’t really tell which books are good and worth reading. I will have to see a few other lists before I can accurately judge this list. Releasing over a dozen lists makes me feel like Barnes & Noble was trying to beat everyone to the punchline and grab headlines.
