FBI Director Kash Patel's activities during the investigation of conservative activist Charlie Kirk's assassination raise questions about his decision-making during a crisis, four former FBI officials and two administration officials told NBC News. From the shooting Wednesday to a suspect's arrest Friday, Patel took steps that gave pause to some federal and local officials and raised questions about his judgment, the sources said. Several spoke on the condition of anonymity, some because they were not authorized to speak publicly and others citing fear of retaliation from the Trump administration. Those actions ranged from where Patel was on the evening of the assassination to what a former official described as his "grandstanding" about his own role after the arrest. "He has heard concerns about how this looks," an administration official said in a statement. "There are a lot of shaking heads."

In an interview on "Fox & Friends" on Monday, Patel defended his handling of the investigation, including social media posts he made the day of the shooting. Officials are scheduled to provide an update in the investigation of the fatal shooting of conservative activist Charlie Kirk.

Kirk, a close political ally of President Donald Trump, was shot and killed while speaking at an event at Utah Valley University on Sept. 10. As of early Sept. 11, authorities were still searching for the suspected shooter. Two people had been detained in the hours after the shooting, including one who was interrogated by law enforcement, but both were subsequently released. FBI agents and state authorities are expected to hold a news conference regarding on the manhunt at 9 a.m.

A heated exchange erupted between Sen. Adam Schiff, a California Democrat, and Patel when Schiff questioned Patel about FBI terminations and the Epstein files. Schiff asked whether Patel ever terminated or disciplined an FBI employee because they were assigned to or worked on an investigation into Mr. Trump or the Jan. 6, 2021, attack. As Patel reiterated his earlier response about the parameters surrounding FBI terminations, Schiff demanded a yes or no response.

Patel said he directed authorities to release the photo of the suspect, 22-year-old Tyler Robinson, in the Kirk shooting. Kirk was killed in Utah on Wednesday and Robinson was apprehended after his father recognized him in photographs released by authorities, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said on Friday. His father told Robinson to turn himself in, with the 22-year-old initially saying no, but later changing his mind, officials said. The suspect in custody in connection with the assassination of Charlie Kirk is a 22-year-old from Utah, a law enforcement official told The Associated Press. Authorities have identified the suspect as Tyler Robinson, said the official, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the ongoing investigation.
