LaNorris Sellers was a projected sleeper for the first overall pick entering the 2025 campaign, and it’s no secret why. At 6’3″, 242 pounds, with hyper-elite athleticism, evasive and creative flair, and wicked arm strength and velocity generation, his raw tools are second to none.

But while fellow SEC signal caller Ty Simpson is climbing up the board, Sellers is falling, and could ultimately be best served to return to school, and perhaps test the transfer portal. Sellers hasn’t necessarily been bad in 2025. His 79.5 PFSN CFB QBi figure is comfortably above-average, and around middle-of-the-pack for notable 2026 NFL Draft prospects. But he also hasn’t been consistently good, and that’s the issue for the aspiring early-round pick. Outside of a strong all-around performance against Missouri where he willed his team to compete, Sellers has only eclipsed 200 yards passing once, and three times, he’s been held out of the end zone... There are excuses to catalogue for Sellers, of course.

His supporting cast is one of the worst in the SEC. The Gamecocks’ Team OL+ rating is 116th in the nation — the only such SEC unit outside of the Top 100 — and his weapons core is paltry at best. Outside of former five-star recruit Nyckoles Harbor — who himself is a one-dimensional vertical threat — the Gamecocks’ receiving corps has very little to offer. When I started to produce some 2026 mocks in 2024, I had Sellers as a future first-rounder even though he barely played as the backup to Spencer Rattler.

The reason I had that projection on Sellers was that team sources had told me that the Gamecocks’ backup quarterback had a great skill set with big-time upside. With Rattler in the NFL, Sellers took some time but had a breakout year in his first season as a starter in 2024. In 2024, Sellers completed 66 percent of his passes for 2,534 yards with 18 touchdown passes, seven interceptions, and seven rushing touchdowns. Sellers will see some tough competitors during the 2025 season. The best games to watch him could include LSU (Oct. 11), Oklahoma (Oct.

18), Alabama (Oct. 25), Texas A&M (Nov. 15), and Clemson (Nov. 29). Sellers was impressive last year in the finale against the Tigers using his legs to produce some huge plays, and they have a defense loaded with NFL talent. For a long time, the big-armed pocket passer was the rage in the NFL, but over the last decade, the league has fallen in love with mobile quarterbacks who are dual-threats and bring dangerous...

With that being the case, there probably will be plenty of scouts who are high on Sellers and give him a starter grade in their reports. For the NFL, Sellers is a dynamic playmaker who is a threat to produce a big play on any snap. With good size and strength, Sellers has a rare ability to break tackles in the pocket and bail out his offensive line from allowing a sack. Sellers is strong to shed tackles, and then scramble out of danger to be in position to make a pass or take off down the field with surprising acceleration. Sellers has quick feet and reaction ability to dodge pass rushers and does an advanced job of keeping his eyes downfield when he has to start moving. Sellers throws well on the run and has easy arm strength to loft passes down the field.

Sellers are dangerous on designed runs, and are a real asset to convert on third-and-medium or in the red zone. As a runner, Sellers has a play style that is similar to Buffalo Bills quarterback Josh Allen. With his signature glasses and a big smile, LaNorris Sellers took college football by storm last year as a redshirt freshman. Staying in his home state of South Carolina, Sellers was a three-star high school recruit and won the quarterback battle during spring practices. Exploding onto the scene with 2,534 passing yards and 18 touchdowns despite missing a game due to injury, he added 674 yards and seven touchdowns on the ground, battling through some lingering injuries near... At 6-3, 240 pounds, Sellers is as athletic as they come, with the frame NFL evaluators are looking for.

As a passer, his biggest strength is his arm talent. He’s got a rocket for an arm, and he can comfortably make every NFL throw. Sellers gets clobbered by the pass rush as he releases this ball, so he’s not able to plant and drive through his lower half. Just off arm strength alone, he throws a perfect pass 40 yards downfield into the outstretched arms of his receiver, before the safety can come over to break it up. There are NFL starters right now that can’t make that throw. Here’s another example: There comes a moment in every NFL Draft cycle when a team considers skipping out on a rookie quarterback with the hopes of next season's class offering more promise. Some years, that optimism is rewarded with an incredibly deep class.

More often, a year of examination and adversity reveals flaws that previously went unnoticed. At 6’3”, 240 pounds, the redshirt sophomore from Florence, South Carolina, possesses the type of size, athleticism, and arm strength that turns heads in NFL front offices. He’s a true dual-threat quarterback with dynamic playmaking ability both in and out of structure.

Coming off a breakout redshirt freshman campaign in 2024—where he earned FWAA National Freshman Offensive Player of the Year and SEC Freshman of the Year honors—Sellers is already on the radar as a potential... But to solidify himself as a first-rounder, there’s one critical area he must improve. His physicality is rare—even among dual-threat prospects.

Arm Strength & Platform Flexibility - Can generate top-end velocity from various arm angles. Easily drives deep outs and vertical shots without needing a perfect base—placing him among the top arm talents in college football. South Carolina quarterback LaNorris Sellers would probably be a first round pick if the 2026 NFL Draft was tomorrow. However, just evaluating his 2024 tape and not factoring in positional value delivers a lower grade. Sellers’ potential is through the roof, but he needs to take several massive steps forward this season to be an NFL starter in 2026. The one-year college starter projects best as a 2027 NFL Draft prospect.

Competing in two more college seasons would give Sellers plenty of time on task to round out his game and prove himself as a top draft pick.
