Introduction To Algebra Scio Academy
Introduction to Algebra is the foundation of upper level mathematics. In Algebra we study linear equations, quadratic equations, graphing, and solving for the unknown. This course contains all of a typical Algebra 1 course and most of a typical Algebra 2 course. If your student only wants to complete Algebra 1, then he will stop after Chapter 14 in the text. Please see the syllabus and AOPS grid below to understand the course progression. If videos aren't your thing, here's a rundown in text form:
I have yet to find a more challenging, complete, and approachable pre algebra text as this one. If you think that your child's math education is something to cringe your way through, then admittedly this class is not for you. However, if you have come to understand that the art of mathematics is about discovering the hidden patterns and shaping our finite minds to comprehend the infinite, then this is your math class! AOPS pre algebra takes time to adapt, as it literally molds our minds to discover the Truth of God through his logos. Jacobs Elementary Algebra text is the most approachable logical algebra text, which has stood the test of time. Students, teachers, and schools have been using this book for more than 50 years with success.
This is a mainstream program that most every student does well with. This class is a continuation of last year's algebra 1 and 2 class. We will start with a review from Foerster's algebra and trigonometry text, move into finishing Jacobs' Elementary Algebra, and then finish up the algebra 2 portion of Foerster's text. This class is great for those students who may have "completed" algebra 1 last year, just barely, or who got halfway through and needed to take more time. This class is perfect for solidifying both algebra 1 and 2 concepts in a single course and preparing students for geometry. If your student loves the beauty of mathematics, struggling to discover and interpret those patterns, and plans to continue to a competitive STEM program, then this math class is for her.
This is AOPS's book covering all of algebra 1 and 2 in an intense year of awesome math magic! We will cover chapters 1 - 21 in this live course, and many students will continue to finish chapter 22 after our last class to gain 1.5 credits in algebra 1 and 2. Pre algebra, historically known as advanced arithmetic, is a yearlong course aimed at middle school students. The goal of pre algebra is to reinforce arithmetic concepts and introduce concrete thinkers to some of the abstract concepts that they will encounter in algebra. Scio’s pre algebra course follows the format of the suggested text Suggested Text: […] Introduction to Algebra is the foundation of upper level mathematics.

I have peace of mind knowing that my kids are learning how to think well and solve problems." By middle and high school, students should be applying the skills and calculations that they’ve learned in math to think logically and solve problems.
Students in middle school are diving deep into number sense while developing their brains to think about and solve problems. Bridging the gap from calculations to problem solving is an essential part of mathematics education. As middle and high school students move beyond calculations and into the world of discovery, they need more than a video and textbook. They need someone to lead the way, model great thinking, and teach them how to solve problems. Math Masters courses provide the video lessons for a particular text, but they also give your family a math guide: Someone to field your questions, encourage your students, and guide your entire family toward... Algebra is the foundation of upper level mathematics.
In Algebra we study linear equations, quadratic equations, graphing, and solving for the unknown. This course follows Harold Jacobs' iconic Algebra text as a parent-directed student-led tutor-assisted independent study. Infinity came up this past week in our classes, as we were studying set notation. Even the smallest thing in mathematics can remind us that God exists. In set notation we have this weird sub language of solution groups that look something like this: x∊{(3,5]}. Let me explain what this means a bit: x : […]
Sometimes it is easy to get so lost in the symbols that we forget that we are looking at truth. We are searching for patterns in the apparent chaos. In algebra 2 we are so far into the language of algebra that we no longer think of x as a value, but as a thing. Now that we’ve determined when procedures are necessary and how to not be entangled in the mindless following of said procedures. Let’s go ahead and review a few simple key steps to making a good procedure. First, when you are faced with a series of problems that appear to contain a hidden truth and consistency
Ahhh! Optimization! The wonderful world of gathering a plethora of information, variables, realities, and patterns and using it to determine the best possible decision. In Algebra, students dip their toes in the beginnings of optimization with linear equations, but do they know that? Nope. Neither do they know the power they could yield.
The reality It’s math challenge time! Engaging in riddles and games is a common past time and a rewarding one. When we try to solve a riddle or play a strategy game we stretch our minds in the same way that my Pre algebra students learn to stretch theirs. In this, our minds grow and we are Algebra 1 is the foundation of upper level mathematics.
It is essential that our children have a solid foundation in Algebra before continuing into Geometry or Algebra 2. This self-paced class contains 6 modules. Each module is considered a week's worth of summer math work. As always, this course is available free to all math masters! Please note, there is no class on October 31st at AoPS Online. Have a question about how classes work? I really enjoyed this course...I don't think any other Algebra 1 would have kept me as busy and challenged as this one. Something appears to not have loaded correctly.
