This game was already in the books before Chris Rodriguez Jr. carried it up the gut for a score, but not even a crazy comeback would revive this crowd, with Jayden Daniels now in the locker room with a seemingly serious arm injury. The Commanders quarterback, who'd just returned from a hamstring issue, required a large arm brace before exiting. Oh man: Washington's star signal-caller was driving the Commanders into the red zone (albeit down 31 points with fewer than eight minutes to play) and had his left arm trapped as he went to... Replay wasn't pretty. Medical trainers escorted Daniels off the field with his elbow immobilized.
The Seahawks used their 6-foot-6 tight end to take the direct snap under center and plow in for six: Who says the Seahawks' quarterback can't make acrobatic plays, too? Daniels escaped a slew of Seahawks defenders on his way to an improbable would-be first-down scramble, but then Williams' last-second dive tripped up the Commanders' slippery quarterback, preventing Washington from adding points after Sam... The Seattle Seahawks hit the road and took on the Washington Commanders for Week 9's "Sunday Night Football" game. When the dust settled, the Seahawks came away with the 38-14 win. Seattle absolutely dominated the game from the opening kickoff. The Seahawks ended the first quarter up 7-0, but then took advantage of a touchdown, instant turnover, instant touchdown situation to score 14 points in about 11 seconds to get up 21-0 earlier. Even though it was early in the second quarter, it felt like the game was over, and hindsight proved that it was. The Seahawks' offense continued to be a problem with quarterback Sam Darnold throwing for 330 yards with four touchdowns and an interception.
Wide receiver Jaxon Smith-Njigba tallied his fourth straight game with at least 100 receiving yards, finishing with 129 yards on eight receptions. For Washington, the offense struggled. The Commanders didn't have Terry McLaurin, and Luke McCaffrey got hurt on the opening kickoff. The story of the game for Washington went from concerns over their struggles and lack of adjustments to concerns for quarterback Jayden Daniels. He was slung to the ground midway through the fourth quarter, and his arm got caught under him and bent the wrong way. Daniels was quickly taken to the locker room, and could miss an extended period of time.
Washington star quarterback Jayden Daniels exited with an injury late in the fourth quarter. Seattle Seahawks quarterback Sam Darnold passes the ball against the Washington Commanders on Sunday. Nick Wass / The Associated Press The Washington Commanders needed a bounce-back win at the halfway point of the NFL season. Instead, they lost big during Week 9 — twice. In the midst of being routed at home, 38-14, Washington’s second-year star quarterback, Jayden Daniels, was injured after falling awkwardly midway through the fourth quarter while the game was no longer in doubt.
His left, non-throwing arm, was immobilized and he walked off under his own power and received X-rays. NFLAdvertisementliveUpdated 2m agoAfter missing Washington's Week 8 game with a hamstring injury, Jayden Daniels is back in the lineup for the Commanders as they host Sam Darnold and the Seattle Seahawks on ‘Sunday Night... Commanders vs. Seahawks is the best matchup of throwback uniforms in any game this season. Hands down.AdvertisementIt may be more difficult to get Deebo Samuel more involved while Terry McLaurin is out; Seattle’s defense can bracket or double him because it doesn’t have another imposing threat to worry about... Luke McCaffrey and Jaylin Lane have made their share of big plays, but neither has done it consistently.
Enter Treylon Burks, who signed with Washington amid its receiver injuries and is active for the first time in more than a year after recovering from an ACL injury. His involvement may be limited, but a big play can go a long way. The Commanders led the league in both rushing yards per game (156.4) and per carry (5.9) in the first five weeks of the season. Over the last three weeks, however, Washington has ranked 18th per game (106.7) and 20th per carry (4.1). The Commanders have been without two of their top receivers, Terry McLaurin and Noah Brown, for much of the season. Against Dallas in Week 7, Washington was without its top three wideouts: McLaurin, Brown and Deebo Samuel.
Defenses have, in turn, played the Commanders differently, using more man coverage against their remaining receivers and loading the box. Making matters worse, Washington has often been playing catch-up in games so it’s resorted to passing instead of utilizing the run game. But the offense needs to jumpstart the run game and give rookie Jacory “Bill” Croskey-Merritt more opportunities to move the ball. The Seahawks are sitting strong with an 83 percent likelihood of making the playoffs, according to The Athletic's playoff simulator. A win for Seattle tonight would see that figure rise to 88, while a loss would drop it to 71. The Commanders, on the other hand, currently have just an eight percent chance of making the playoffs, according to our simulator.
A win tonight would lift those odds to 15 percent, while a loss would see it fall to five percent. LANDOVER, Md. — The Commanders will retire Art Monk’s No. 81 jersey at halftime of tonight’s game against the Seahawks. Washington’s all-time leading receiver (12,026 yards, 888 catches) is the sixth player to have his jersey retired by the franchise. Several before kickoff, I spotted his Hall of Fame bust on the lower level of the stadium and snapped this photo.
The points spread for tonight's game is hovering between the Seahawks being favored by 2.5 and 3 points. Seattle is -160 on the moneyline compared to +135 for Washington, according to BetMGM. The over/under points total is set at 48.5.AdvertisementWe're just about halfway through the regular season, so it's time to start considering the playoff picture. The Seahawks are in a strong position despite playing in one of the toughest divisions in the NFL. A win tonight would see them reclaim first place in the NFC West ahead of the Rams. You'll notice that the Commanders don't appear on the list above.
With their 3-5 record, they only sit above three teams in the NFC standings. However, they're only two games back of the final wild-card spot. Tonight marks the 21st regular-season meeting between the Seahawks and the Commanders, with Washington holding a 13-7 advantage all-time over Seattle. The two franchises have also met three times in the playoffs, with the Seahawks winning all three in 2006, 2008 and 2013.These teams' most recent meeting came in Week 10 of the 2023 season. Things looked mighty different back then, with Sam Howell and Geno Smith playing quarterback and Pete Carroll and Ron Rivera coaching on the sidelines. A dramatic ending saw Washington kick a game-tying field goal with 52 seconds remaining, only for Jason Myers to hit a 43-yard walk-off field goal as time expired to give Seattle a 29-26 win...
💬 Joel R.: It’s kind of embarrassing having all these prime time games with the way the Commanders' season is going 😂 Maybe Daniels can put on a show so the game at least... But I’m not especially hopeful going up against Macdonald’s defense without any wide receivers.💬 Daniel D.: I'm excited! Should be a good game. Kliff Kingsbury will have something cooking. I'm grilling chicken and having Belgium beer. Good times.💬 Matthew M.: I like the Hawks right now against anyone in the league except for Detroit, Philly, KC, and possibly Buffalo and the Rams.
Not saying they wouldn’t compete against these teams. Anybody else, very confident in a Seahawks win. Very impressed by Coach Mike’s ability to prepare these guys and keep them in the proper mindset. Go Hawks!Remember, you can send us your thoughts, predictions and general musings by emailing us at live@theathletic.com. We'll be featuring some of your submissions in our coverage here throughout the night. Cooper Kupp is among the Seahawks’ inactives tonight.
The veteran wide receiver came into the week dealing with a heel issue, then injured his hamstring in Thursday’s practice. He didn’t practice Friday and was listed questionable to play against the Commanders.Seattle will also be without receivers Jake Bobo (Achilles) and Dareke Young (quad). Cody White and rookie Ricky White III were elevated from the practice squad yesterday to play tonight alongside Jaxon Smith-Njigba and rookie Tory Horton. This will be Horton’s first game as the No. 2 wide receiver, putting him in line to get more action in the passing game with Kupp out.Rookie fullback Robbie Ouzts is also active. It’s his first game back from injured reserve due to an ankle sprain suffered in Week 3.AdvertisementZero surprises here.
