We started the company in a bedroom in Vancouver, Canada 574 days ago as a side project. We were trying to solve a very simple problem for a group of people in a Discord server who weren’t highly technical, and it spiralled into something larger than we ever imagined.

We focused on keeping the team small and iterating as fast as humanly possible on the product while talking to users. We technically raised this Series A as a team of 2 founders without hiring anyone full time (we did have 2 awesome interns for a while and 2 other exceptional contractors). We'll be growing headcount but we aim to keep this disproportionately large throughput per employee going moving forward. Led by Nexus Venture Partners, the round also saw participation from First Round Capital, Y Combinator, and notable angel investors like Max Mullen (Instacart), Shaan Puri, Bryant Chou (Webflow), and Reynold Xin (Databricks). This funding brings Gumloop’s total capital raised to $20 million. Gumloop was founded in April 2023 by McGill University classmates Max Brodeur-Urbas and Rahul Behal. Initially named AgentHub, the company changed its name to Gumloop in May 2023 to make it sound more accessible to non-developers. The startup began as a side project aimed at solving simple problems for a Discord community. Today, it has grown into a platform used by thousands of users, ranging from indie hackers to enterprise teams at companies like Instacart, Webflow, Rippling, and Fortune 100s.

Developers Max Brodeur-Urbas and Rahul Behal think that AI has the potential to automate lots of business-relevant tasks, but that many of the AI-powered automation tools on the market today are unreliable and costly. Part of the problem is that users expect too much of AI, Brodeur-Urbas told TechCrunch — for instance, they assume that it can handle highly specialized, niche workloads where precision matters. “If users ever want to use AI for enterprise purposes, the technology really has to have no margin for error,” Brodeur-Urbas said. “Leaving specific workflows completely up to AI is not realistic. Users would be paying for [an AI] to spin its wheels performing the same Google search over and over again.” Still, Brodeur-Urbas, an ex-Microsoft software engineer, and Behal, previously a software developer at Amazon Web Services, thought today’s AI had promising narrower applications.

So they started thinking about ways they could squeeze what Brodeur-Urbas called “real value” out of AI tech. These ideas became a wrapper for the open source app Auto-GPT, then a proof-of-concept, and eventually a startup: Gumloop.
