giants quiet at nfl trade deadline leave jaxson dart to the wolves

The New York Giants, mired in another lost season, did not make any deals as the NFL trading deadline passed on Tuesday afternoon. There was speculation that general manager Joe Schoen would attempt to add an offensive playmaker to assist rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart for the remainder of the season and possibly beyond. The Giants have lost their top wide receiver Malik Nabers, and top running back, rookie Cam Skattebo, to injuries, and the depth chart is very thin at both positions. Two of the alleged wide receiver targets the Giants had been rumored to have interest in were traded, though. New Orleans dealt Rashid Shaeed to the Seattle Seahawks for fourth and fifth-round picks in next year's draft. The Las Vegas Raiders traded Jakobi Meyers to the Jacksonville Jaguars for fourth and sixth-round picks.

Both deals might have been a little rich for the Giants' blood, as they do not have a lot of draft capital at their disposal. The Giants' main target was the Miami Dolphins wide receiver Jaylen Waddle, but the Dolphins reportedly wanted a first-round selection in return. The Giants, and everyone else, it seems, balked at that price as Waddle was not dealt. GM Joe Schoen didn't make any deals ahead of Tuesday's NFL trade deadline. ET trade deadline passed Tuesday without any activity from the New York Giants, who were neither buyers nor sellers. Only three weeks ago, standing pat seemed unlikely, as the Giants were coming off a huge prime-time win over the division rival Philadelphia Eagles and seemed poised to turn a corner behind the heroics... After losing star receiver Malik Nabers for the season to an ACL tear, rumors swirled about adding a top receiving talent to help Dart’s development, especially after the victory over Philadelphia moved the Giants... They carried that momentum of that victory into Denver and should have come away with a win. Instead, they suffered a historic meltdown, allowing the Broncos to pull off a miraculous comeback that put the kibosh on the Giants’ good vibes. Two dismal showings, along with a season-ending injury for top rusher Cam Skattebo, have followed.

The Giants are now amid a three-game losing streak and have dropped to 2-7 for the third season in a row. And here's the recording to yesterday's live room, where I continued my streak of saying I'm not that fired up … and then 20 minutes later found myself launching into an eight-minute rant on... Oh, the NFL trade deadline. There's nothing quite like it. It's a time when aspirations and dreams supersede logic in the most irrational yet rational way possible. A time when a fan's favorite team would, should, and could trade for that perfect player to put them over the top.

It's silly SZN in the best way and really brings out the creativity in all of us. Unless you're a New York Giants fan — that's where any and all hopes and dreams go to die. Speaking of the Giants, their season is all but over, everything is a complete mess, and they're doing absolutely nothing to fix any of it. Which is awesome, considering that at the center of all their decision-making should be rookie quarterback sensation Jaxson Dart, but trusting this regime to do the right thing is like asking Deonte Banks to... Tuesday's trade deadline presented general manager Joe Schoen with the perfect opportunity to do something... anything to help surround Dart with a bit more oomph, but the much-maligned exec failed to do so, throwing the franchise's 22-year-old savior to the wolves.

No one, except for maybe head coach Brian Daboll, thought the 25th overall pick would be this good this early on. The knock on Dart coming out of Ole Miss was he's more potential than polish — that he was more of a developmental quarterback than finished product. The New York Giants and general manager Joe Schoen stood pat at the trade deadline, despite some chatter that they could be sellers. Former draft disappointments Evan Neal and Jalin Hyatt were rumored to garner some interest, but were still Giants after Tuesday’s deadline came and went. With a quarterback room featuring two veterans in Russell Wilson and Jameis Winston, it was thought that New York could recoup some value from either signal-caller. Once again, the Giants refrained and will carry both former starters with them until the end of the season.

Winston specifically seems to be in Big Blue’s long-term plans, at least for 2026, and if you’ve watched him on the sideline this season interacting with teammates and rookie quarterback Jaxson Dart, it’s easy... At 2-7 and spiraling toward another lost season, Big Blue’s silence stood in stark contrast to their MetLife Stadium co-tenants, the New York Jets, who aggressively reshaped their roster. But sometimes inaction speaks louder than any transaction — and what the Giants didn’t do reveals plenty about the franchise’s uncertain direction. Unless the team engineers a miraculous turnaround over the final eight games, head coach Brian Daboll will likely be dismissed.

General manager Joe Schoen’s future, however, remains murkier. The decision to stand pat rather than trade assets like wide receiver Jalin Hyatt or offensive lineman Evan Neal for future draft capital suggests the 46-year-old general manager isn’t a lock to return next... If co-owners John Mara and Steve Tisch had given him a vote of confidence, why wouldn’t he maximize assets for the 2026 NFL Draft? Perhaps ownership doesn’t want Schoen making long-term roster decisions if his job security remains in question. Schoen and Daboll’s working relationship dates to their Buffalo Bills tenure from 2018-2021, and Schoen hired Daboll as New York’s head coach in January 2022. The belief has been their fates are intertwined.

Their collective inaction at the deadline only reinforces that connection. Polarizing speculation surrounded the Giants leading up to the trade deadline. Would they be buyers for a wide receiver, despite being 2-7? Would they sell off any star veterans for significant draft capital, or at least sell former draft busts for pennies on the dollar? As it turned out when the deadline passed on Tuesday at 4 p.m., the Giants did … nothing. Joe Schoen reportedly made calls to teams on all three of the aforementioned possibilities, but nothing materialized.

That’s a cold reality if you’re a Giants fan, no matter which direction you thought they should go. Inactivity signals a franchise that is in tough spot — not equipped to pay a hefty price for a star player, nor tear it all down with coaching and front office jobs on the... The NFL community is split on the biggest decision the New York Giants made in the 2025 NFL Draft. After taking Penn State edge rusher Abdul Carter at No. 3 overall, the Giants made the crucial decision to trade back into the first round for Ole Miss quarterback Jaxson Dart. While some analysts can see the vision of Dart given his traits and leadership, others aren't sold on the plan to pay a trio of Day 2 picks for a developmental prospect.

Pete Prisco of CBS Sports is in the latter group. "I didn't love the trade back into the first round to take quarterback Jaxson Dart. I understand why they did it, but I wouldn't have done that for Dart. It reeked of panic," Prisco wrote.
