Georgetown Law Dean William M. Treanor announced on April 22 that the Law Center would offer tuition discounts on select LL.M. degrees and continuing education programs to current or recently separated government lawyers. In a message to the Georgetown Law community, Treanor wrote, “The recent federal actions affecting government employees have created uncertainty and disruption for many individuals in our region and across the government. In March, Interim President Groves shared a message with the Georgetown community highlighting resources for recently separated federal workers, which includes career counseling seminars, scholarships, and professional development opportunities. “As part of this larger institutional effort, and to help affected federal lawyers, I am pleased to announce that Georgetown Law will also offer support to government lawyers affected by recent federal job reductions.”

A substantially reduced LL.M. tuition rate of 50% to lawyers who have a J.D. from a U.S.-accredited law school who have recently left government service. The reduced tuition rate applies to the following LL.M. degree programs: LL.M.

in Environmental & Energy Law LL.M. in International Business & Economic Law LL.M. in National & Global Health Law LL.M. in National Security Law LL.M. in Taxation LL.M. in Technology Law & Policy

Georgetown University Law Center is reducing its LL.M. tuition by 50% for lawyers who have recently left government service and have a J.D. from a U.S.-accredited law school. The tuition cut, announced Thursday, includes LL.M. degree programs in environmental and energy law, international business and economic law, national and global health law, national security law, taxation, and technology law and policy. Georgetown Law Dean William Treanor’s announcement follows the university’s previous decision to offer resources for recently separated federal workers.

Interim University President Robert Groves shared a message last month, which included introducing the school’s new website, titled Federal Workforce Transition Resources. "Over the past few weeks, the lives of thousands of public servants have been disrupted with reductions in staff at federal agencies," Groves said in the March letter. "Facing this, deans and program leaders have asked themselves, 'How should we live Georgetown’s mission at this moment? How could we support public servants who have lost their jobs? How can we support our students who face new challenges to being people for others?' Our university response: we expand opportunities for education." But an even better one would be to include everyone who has been impacted by the recent government layoffs and cuts in foreign aid funding including lawyers and professionals in the private and non-profit... A gracious response in a very mean time. Congrats. This sound like a timely, caring idea, but I have a question: why would the graduate of a law school in the USA need an LLM to practice in any of those areas? When I went to law school the only lawyers who got LLM's were tax practitioners and foreign lawyers who wanted to sit for a US bar exam. Are all these modern LLMs just a money-making ploy by law schools (I know the non-JD degrees that do not lead to taking the bar are for sure) to make money?

The price of this “degree” should be $0. The only purpose of an LLM (other than in Tax) is to allow foreign grads to sit for the bar. This generous discount is for the ex-govt lawyers from the US schools. Just a publicity stunt. My advice to these ex-govt lawyers is to learn a trade. Groves addressed the recent upheaval affecting the government workforce.

“Over the past few weeks,” Groves wrote on March 17, “the lives of thousands of public servants have been disrupted with reductions in staff at federal agencies.” The Washington, D.C.-based university is responding to recent federal layoffs and firings by expanding educational opportunities for affected federal workers. As Groves outlined in his recent message to members of the Georgetown University community, the school is launching a program to offer scholarships for tuition reduction and additional career services for current or recently... “We want to help them retool, to update knowledge and skills,” said Groves in a statement, “and prepare for new ways forward.” Georgetown Law will offer a 30% reduction in tuition for Masters of Laws (LL.M.) degrees for U.S.-educated attorneys whose U.S. government jobs were affected by recent federal workforce reductions and reorganizations.

The Law Center first made tuition discounts available last spring to applicants for LL.M. degree programs in the 2025-6 academic year; the new discount is available for applicants to programs starting in the fall of 2026. “Georgetown Law has from its founding welcomed public servants as students, and we are glad to be able to help former federal workers who have experienced career disruptions gain skills for their next stage,”... Teitelbaum. Some 25 former federal attorneys are benefiting from a tuition discount in the current academic year.
