former no 1 overall pick says patriots should trade up so they msn

The New England Patriots are a team in transition. Everything is in flux, from a new Head Coach and his coaching staff to a new player personnel guy to the necessity for a total roster transformation. Mike Vrabel has to make the 2025 offseason as successful as last year's, which was a total flop (absent Drake Maye). Good teams are molded in the offseason. As for the Patriots in 2024, an offseason that fails inevitably leads to a similar season. It ain't rocket science.

There is no season in the NFL, or any other league for that matter, than the one in front of you. Any other is an illusion. The Patriots have to build for and plan to win now. Vrabel has to spend well and sign only the best possible free agents at positions of need. In the draft, forget to trade down for "value." Draft a few players who improve your team at key positions and forget anything else. There's one player in the draft who warrants a major investment.

It's Colorado's Travis Hunter. If Mike Vrabel isn't convinced that you win with top players and scout and bring in the rest, then this theory can be thrown out the window. The speculation here is that he's very astute and knows you only win with enough top players. He'll act accordingly. The best player in the draft and college football is Travis Hunter, who excels at not one but two positions: wide receiver, a top Patriots need, and cornerback. A meaningless, foolish win against the Buffalo Bills B-team in January tossed the number one pick out and also may have sealed the fate of then-Head Coach Jerod Mayo.

Albert Breer joins Sports Sunday to give his take on the Patriots’ final matchup of the season vs. the Buffalo Bills, and the importance of maintaining control of No. 1 pick in 2025 Draft. The New England Patriots will enter Week 18 with the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft. They are not guaranteed to earn that selection, but it would be theirs if they lose to the Buffalo Bills at home on Sunday afternoon.

(Check out all the potential scenarios here). If the Patriots do secure the No. 1 pick for the first time since 1993, it wouldn't be surprising if they entertained trading the selection, purely based on the fact that the franchise doesn't need a quarterback. The top pick in the NFL draft has been traded 13 times since the league’s merger more than five decades ago. The New England Patriots could soon represent No.

14. New England finds itself in an advantageous position entering its season finale against the Buffalo Bills. The Patriots currently hold the No. 1 pick in the 2025 NFL Draft, and a loss at Gillette Stadium on Sunday would mean the organization earns the top selection. Since the Patriots have franchise quarterback Drake Maye, there’s reason to believe New England will trade No. 1 to a quarterback-needy team.

New England would acquire more draft capital in that scenario. But what might a trade look like? While no two trades are the same — especially since some draft evaluators don’t view the 2025 quarterback class as highly as those in the past — we do have past trades to look... With one game left in the 2024 regular season, the New England Patriots currently hold the first-overall pick in the 2025 NFL draft. A Patriots' loss to the Buffalo Bills in their Week 18 AFC East showdown at Gillette Stadium on Sunday would secure that selection while a victory would drop them down a few spots. If New England goes into the offseason with the top pick, they should consider moving it to a quarterback-needy team and add more talented players to their roster to help them rebuild quicker.

Earlier this week DraftKings shared a hypothetical trade for the first-overall pick between the Patriots and the New York Giants. In the deal, New England would receive New York's first (No. 4 overall) and second-round picks in 2025, a first in 2026, a second in 2027 and edge rusher Brian Burns. Which team says no to this trade? 🤔 pic.twitter.com/oi1XW3TjiU What Boston really cares about right now.

Almost twenty years ago, in 1996, Keyshawn Johnson was selected No. 1 overall as a wide receiver for an AFC East team. And now, he’s arguing that the Patriots should made a similar move. Appearing on set with Celtics legend Paul Pierce, Johnson said that New England should trade for the No. 1 overall pick in this year’s draft to select Colorado’s Travis Hunter. “Let’s say, for instance, at the No.

1 spot the Tennessee Titans elect to move down to No. 4 and the New England Patriots go up to 1,” Johnson said during a recent episode of FS1’s “Speak.” “Perfect landing spot for Travis. You get Drake Maye an offensive weapon. You now have a corner you can play opposite of [Christian] Gonzalez, which is an All-Pro guy. You play him opposite of that and you get a locker room changing culture.” The Patriots are open to trading the fourth overall pick under the right circumstances.

Owning the fourth overall selection in the 2025 NFL Draft, the New England Patriots are prepared to make a pick. Who it will be remains to be seen, even though LSU offensive tackle Will Campbell appears to be the favorite at the moment. There is another scenario the team would entertain, though: trading down from No. 4 in order to obtain more capital in what is a meaty middle section in this year’s draft. As of Wednesday evening, there has not been a run for the Patriots’ first-round pick, but things can change quickly the closer the eventual selection comes. Of course, not every team is interested in climbing up the board; neither does every trade proposal makes sense for the clubs involved.

That being said, let’s put our “trade speculation” hat on and assess what we believe to be three at least somewhat realistic scenarios for the Patriots trading down from the fourth overall pick. All of the valuation will be done using Joseph Hefner’s draft trade alue calculator.
