Parents who speak little or no English can contribute to their children’s education in valuable ways. English language learners may benefit when they develop solid literacy skills in their first language before learning to read in a second one. Through Spanish, they are developing key language and literacy skills that may enable them to become excellent readers in English. It’s never too early to start reading to your child! While reading with a baby or toddler may look different than reading with an older child, there are lots of great activities you can do that will help get them ready to become readers.

The College of Education's endorsement academies are designed with teacher's schedules in mind. Our programs are developed for educators currently in the classroom wanting to earn additional endorsements while working. Our endorsement programs focus on high need and in demand areas, while offering a social-justice and culturally responsive context that is inherent to Seattle University. All programs are developed and overseen by Seattle University’s faculty and experienced teacher leaders.

The online English Language Learners (ELL) Endorsement Academy consists of eight classes that meet in virtual, synchronous sessions twice a week in the evenings, with additional asynchronous work throughout the week. Our classes are developed with teacher's schedules in mind. This program helps Washington state certified teachers regardless of where they live prepare for the required WEST-E exam, offering a rigorous and affordable pathway to earning an ELL endorsement. Teachers can apply their learning in the classroom immediately and adjust their techniques as the academy progresses. The online Special Education Endorsement Academy offers teachers Seattle University credits without the commute. The year-long program of 8 courses meets in virtual, synchronous sessions twice a week in the evenings, with additional asynchronous work required throughout the week.

SPS Multilingual Department is committed to Policy 0010, “Environments where all students feel seen, heard, and welcomed in all schools and spaces, including General Education classrooms, regardless of race, gender, ethnicity, disability, socioeconomic status,... Is the language your child first spoke or understood a language other than English? Does your child mostly speak a language other than English? If you answered yes to either of these questions, your child might be eligible for Multilingual Services. In Seattle Public Schools, it is called English Learner/Multilingual Learner (EL/ML) Services.

What is EL/ML services? When your child receives EL/ML Services, it means that during instruction, their teacher(s) provide(s) sensory, graphic, interactive, and emotional support within the classroom. This helps your child more effectively learn both the grade-level subject matter and the English language. We offer multiple endorsement options that can be added to your teaching certificate. English language learning is just one foundational support we offer. We also introduce you to elements of American culture(s) and expectations in American college classrooms to help you thrive in this university setting. We’re on the second floor of Loyola Hall. Feel free to drop in or send us an email if you have any questions! English Language and Culture Bridge (ELCB) courses provide you with training in academic English and American culture. They are designed to prepare students who have already been accepted into Seattle University to successfully meet the rigorous challenges of the University’s degree programs.

The English Language and Culture Bridge courses are highly advanced, with a specific focus on university-level reading, writing, listening, and speaking skills. In addition, the course work concentrates on the American academic culture and the specific preparation for being successful in the American education system. Multilingual learners (ML) are not a single, monolithic group. They come from diverse cultural and linguistic backgrounds and bring with them a multitude of skills, knowledge, and experiences. In Seattle Public Schools, our multilingual learners speak over 140 languages and dialects from 159 different countries, bringing with them their rich cultures and experiences. Therefore, all multilingual learners, regardless of their English language proficiency levels, can be served at any of our K-12 schools. Seattle Public Schools provides services to help students achieve academic excellence while still learning English. An endorsement is the area in which a teacher is qualified to teach. Endorsements can be added in Washington through the options listed below. This information does NOT apply to CTE certificates or specialty area endorsements. Scholarships are available for adding endorsements in shortage areas.

For more information, see Retooling Teacher Programs. Must pass a WEST-E/NES test for the desired endorsement. Tests from other states cannot be used to add endorsements. Process: Complete the required testing and submit the application online through your E-Certification account. WEST-E/NES test information and registration is available online. Consult with your college/university for advice on requirements (Available In-State Programs).

Methods, field experience/internship, and subject matter credit hour requirements* are as follows: Your out-of-state institution must complete the Institutional Verification of Endorsement Program Completion and Character (Form 1522E). You must include the completed form when you apply for the additional endorsement.
