david ortiz fakes a bunt then hits a home run msn

David Ortiz saw two pitches in his first at bat at Yankees Stadium last night. One he tried to bunt, and the other he hit out of the park. You never expect a guy who goes by the name Big Papi to actually try to bunt, but there he was, lowering the bat like he was going to push one down the third... The question posed to dead-pull guys like Ortiz and Mark Teixeira when they struggle with the shift is always: why not try to hit it where they ain’t? For any number of reasons they often opt not to, but Ortiz actually has done it a couple times, once against the Yankees, even. It’s still visually jarring—especially in the first inning—so after he dropped down like he was going to do it, both Ortiz and Derek Jeter, covering the entire left side of the infield, started giggling...

In baseball today, shifting infielders based on tendencies of the batter has become common place. Sometime it’s more exaggerated than others and certain players see them routinely, like David Ortiz. Earlier this season, Ortiz hit a fly ball into a shift employed by the Texas Rangers that brought to an end a perfect game bid by Yu Darvish. On Thursday, the New York Yankees used one and David Ortiz decided to fake a bunt attempt. Derek Jeter reacted by scampering in and a good laugh was had by he and Ortiz. Then, on the very next pitch, Ortiz hit a home run to right field.

Because it’s David Ortiz, and he’s tormented the Yankees over the years, that was bound to be the end result. However, the bunt attempt did provide us with this, so it wasn’t for naught. The Boston Red Sox are playing the New York Yankees this week in a relatively insignificant installment of their long-standing rivalry. One of Derek Jeter‘s last showdowns with the Red Sox, sure. The Yankees on the fringe of the wild card race, yes. But these games still won’t move the needle like they would if both teams were truly relevant.

There was an entertaining moment in Thursday’s game between the Red Sox and Yankees, however, and it involved one of the most familiar figures in the rivalry in Boston designated hitter David Ortiz. Bunting against the shift has been kind of a trend lately. In this case the man known as Big Papi took advantage of the trend, making the Yankees think for a minute by faking a bunt on one pitch. He cut it loose on the next pitch and delivered the home run. The fake bunt likely did little to change Chris Capuano‘s approach against Ortiz, but it added a little flare to this home run.
