Professional learning at the UW College of Education aims to support educators to transform inequitable systems of education to create just, sustainable and culturally-thriving democracies. We value the expertise that educators bring to their work and care deeply about the experiences of children and the communities that they live in. Have questions? Feel free to reach out directly to the ConnectEd professional learning team at ConnectEd@uw.edu. In addition to our ongoing professional learning offerings, the College of Education also offers more customized approaches.

This can take many forms, such as a facilitated book study, a workshop series, job-embedded experiences that involve trying out instructional practices together with students, or providing building- or district-level leadership support. Partnerships range from brief collaborations to multi-year engagements and can involve a team of teachers, or an entire school or district. Each of our learning communities is led by a team of teacher-leaders positioned not as experts but as co-learners alongside fellow participants. Cohorts are supported by College of Education staff and faculty and provide space for participants to build community, make sense of big ideas together, support one another as professionals, and grow their justice work. Individuals or teams of teachers can join one of ConnectEd's EduDesign Learning Communities. Our office can also partner with you to support using the EduDesign model with educators in your school or district.

A small group of faculty and administrators met to discuss the development of a Center for Teaching and Learning (CTL) at Pasadena City College (PCC). Time was spent reviewing sections of a report composed by Suzanne Iwanicki in Spring 2023, during her tenure as Faculty Coordinator for the Division of Institutional Equity, Diversity, and Justice (IEDJ). The report provides an overview of methodologies and principles related to creating and sustaining a CTL and preliminary feedback received from PCC faculty via a survey administered during Spring 2023. Those in attendance agreed to establishing a working group to draft a plan for developing a CTL at PCC. A retreat date was set for July. The working group members read and discussed the article Starting a Center for Teaching and Learning (Dickens et al., 2019), published by the Professional and Organizational Development (POD) Network.

The group also identified additional faculty to invite to the working group: Suzanne Iwanicki (author of the 2023 report about CTLs) and Amy Tahani-Bidmeshki (Faculty Development Committee Chair). After reviewing additional sections of the report composed by Suzanne Iwanicki (2023), the working group drafted a timeline of activities to guide planning for a CTL at PCC. The working group members reviewed and revised the draft timeline of activities to guide planning for a CTL at PCC. The group also affirmed the Academic Senate leadership’s decision to draft a resolution related to the planning and formation of a CTL at PCC. Group members agreed that prior to the next meeting, they each would research two CTLs of their choosing and make note of any aspects or programming that seemed particularly relevant or useful to PCC’s... Time was spent sharing out about the various CTLs that group members explored.

The working group also reviewed a resolution for Academic Senate related to the planning and formation of a CTL at PCC. A discussion was facilitated about supporting faculty and administrators who may want to attend the POD Network Conference (November 2024). Prior to closing the meeting, the working group members received copies of the two books that were selected to inform discussions and planning for a CTL at PCC: (1) Centers for Teaching and Learning:... Wright, 2023; and (2) Taking Flight: Making Your Center for Teaching and Learning Soar – Laura Cruz, Michele A. Parker, Brian Smentkowski, and Marina Smitherman, 2020.
