Retired products, services, features, benefits and programs. Microsoft has quietly revealed it's binning a site dedicated to software licensing info and education that it currently promotes as "a complete and up-to-date resource for anyone who needs to learn about Microsoft licensing." Software licensing is notoriously labyrinthine, so resources like the site Microsoft will close – Get Licensing Ready – can be very handy. Today, the site offers over 50 training modules plus documentation. But Microsoft has decided not to keep it around in its current form. Indeed, visitors to the site currently see a pop-up that explains "Microsoft will be ending support for licensing certifications through this platform and phasing out the Get Licensing Ready resource."

The site's "retirement" date is January 1. Users have until December 1 to complete any active modules and download certificates. If you’re a user of the site, get cracking: Redmond warns it is "unable to provide copies of certification after December 31st, 2024." An email alias dedicated to the site will also go away on New Year's Day. When you purchase through links on our site, we may earn an affiliate commission. Here’s how it works.

A mainstay of the Microsoft channel and pretty much every reseller salesperson’s introduction to the wonderful world of Microsoft licensing, GLR has been a trusty companion to many for decades. It has been around as long as I can remember (so at least 20 years) but it is now a casualty of Microsoft’s apparent lack of interest in licensing these days. My post on LinkedIn has been one of the most liked, commented, and reposted for some time -showing the depth of affection for the platform…and also the concern that it’s going to get even... I haven’t done GLR for a few years but I plan to take them all again and get one last set of certificates for posterity’s sake. So what happens now? That is the question we wish we could answer definitively.

Yet we cannot. Microsoft has given some hints about future plans, but nothing definitive has been offered yet. The good news is that Opkalla remains committed to helping you stay abreast of licensing compliance. As your Microsoft license advisor, we can help you keep things on the up and up. Get Licensing Ready's January retirement was not completely unexpected. The company began hinting at it last year, with official announcements being issued beginning in the fall.
