Elon University and the American Association of Colleges and Universities (AAC&U) have released the second publication in the Student Guide to Artificial Intelligence series. Like the widely adopted first publication, this resource is provided to students and institutions free of charge and is available for download on the Guide’s website: www.studentguidetoai.org or via the AAC&U website at aacu.org/publications. The new publication includes guidance for students using AI in their college studies and offers practical advice about preparing for careers that require AI knowledge and skills. The content was developed with input from consulting scholars and students in 14 countries. This 2025 publication also includes a Spanish language edition.

Students, faculty and staff at 1,900 colleges and universities around the world accessed the first Student Guide to AI when it was released in August 2024. Since then, the guide’s website has provided information to more than 36,000 users in 139 countries. The second publication supplements the first, and both are useful resources for students, faculty and staff who want to learn about AI. Whenever a new technology appears, it is often accompanied by skepticism and rejection. This cycle started long ago—Socrates himself publicly criticized the introduction of writing, viewing it as a threat to memory and wisdom. Later, during the invention of the printing press and the adoption of calculators, teachers expressed similar fears, believing students would lose essential math skills. The same narrative continued with the rise of the internet in the 2000s and now with artificial intelligence. Each time, resistance eventually gave way to acceptance. Education today is facing the same moment of transition.

The sooner we recognize that AI is here to stay, the more agency we have to shape its role in ways that truly benefit teaching and learning. #AIinEducation #EducationalInnovation #ChangeInEducation #FutureOfLearning #EdTech #TeacherDevelopment #DigitalTransformation #EducationLeadership Over the past three weeks, I’ve had the privilege of speaking at two universities about one of the most important topics in education today — the impact of AI on learning and teaching. First, I joined students at John Cabot University who are pursuing a brand new Certificate in AI. Then, I delivered the Keynote Address for the Faculty Convocation at Oregon Institute of Technology. My core message was simple — but urgent: AI isn’t a cheating problem.

It’s an educational problem. We need to stop fighting AI as if it’s the enemy and start teaching original thinking and contextual reasoning — the skills that will define the next generation of innovators. And identify originality competencies and teach students to use AI as an accelerant of their own originality to create true value add and differentiation. Yes, AI might be riding an investment bubble, but like the Internet Bubble, bubbles burst while transformative technologies endure. AI is here to stay — and the students who use it best will be the ones who add value in the workplace. Those who use it as a crutch?

They’ll struggle. They may get by at school, but employers will know. Because in the workplace -- output matters and originality is the differentiator. The real cheating happens when educators fail to inspire students’ drive for originality. It includes guidance for responsible academic AI use, a checklist for ethical and effective engagement with AI, and tips on incorporating AI to enhance student capabilities. It also outlines how to build an effective writing prompt for AI tools and provides practical tips for preparing for the workforce in an AI-driven job market. An initiative of Elon University in partnership with AAC&U, this guide was developed through the collaboration of faculty, scholars, academic leaders, and students at universities from around the world.
