Facing a mountain of opposition from major Democrats warning against going too far to the left, Zohran Mamdani, a 33-year-old New York state legislator, pulled off one of the more incredible upsets in U.S. history by defeating former Gov. Andrew Cuomo in the June 24 Democratic primary for New York City mayor. Mamdani, a member of the Democratic Socialists of America, is now being heralded by the activist left and other prominent progressives as the type of youthful and bold candidate the party needs to pull... "It's a wake-up call for the Democratic Party establishment, should they choose to listen," Stephanie Taylor, co-founder of Progressive Change Campaign Committee, told USA TODAY. "It's voters saying very clearly what they want and offering a direction for how the Democratic Party can start to win again."

President Donald Trump and his supporters are listening and watching, too. They appear to be salivating at the idea of branding the entire Democratic Party with Mamdani's views ahead of the 2026 midterms, when the GOP will be fighting against political headwinds and history suggesting... At 34, Zohran Mamdani, the son of filmmaker Mira Nair and scholar Mahmood Mamdani, has become the first Muslim of Indian origin to be elected mayor of New York City. A onetime rapper turned assembly member from Queens, he ran as a Democrat on a platform centred on affordability and equality. In a fiercely contested race, Mamdani defeated former New York governor Andrew Cuomo, who ran as an independent after losing to him in the Democratic primary, and Republican candidate Curtis Sliwa, securing a decisive... His campaign promises included rent freezes for tenants in rent-stabilised homes, construction of affordable housing, free and faster bus service, universal childcare, and higher taxes on wealthy residents.

In his victory speech, Mamdani quoted India’s first prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru and American socialist leader Eugene Debs, while the Bollywood number Dhoom Macha Le played in the background, a nod to his Indian... He will take office on 1 January 2026, but his win has already triggered debate across the US about the future direction of the Democratic Party. Mamdani’s triumph came alongside Democratic victories in other liberal states such as Virginia and New Jersey, results that lifted party morale almost a year after US President Donald Trump’s return to the White House. But New York City has long been a Democratic stronghold, and Trump’s unpopularity there makes this win more symbolic than surprising. Leading up to yesterday's New York City mayor Democratic primary election (which inevitably decides the city’s next mayor in the fall), prediction markets like Polymarket and Kalshi considered former governor Andrew Cuomo the 90%+... Cuomo’s closest competitor, New York State Assembly-member Zohran Mamdani, trailed significantly, rarely cracking 5%.

Cuomo’s $24 million campaign featured a bevy of attack ads and high profile endorsements — including former president Bill Clinton and mayor Mike Bloomberg. Even the The New York Times thrashed Mamdani, calling him ‘unsuited’ and ‘less… experience[d] than perhaps any mayor in New York history’. Mamdani’s campaign looked like a long-shot, with even his most ardent supporters saying things like “it’s going to be close”. Except, ultimately, it wasn’t. While Mamdani hasn’t officially won due to the fun complexity of ranked choice voting, his victory is almost assured (and Cuomo has already called him to effectively concede). How did a relatively unknown, ‘inexperienced’ 33 year old local politician upset one of the biggest names in New York politics?

While it’s true Cuomo is a problematic person (and candidate), that hasn’t exactly stopped American voters from making some recent, ‘questionable’ selections.
